TR-004 drops after firmware upgrade to QTS 5

Post by landseer_sg »

Anyone experienced their TR-004 dropping off after the firmware upgrade from QTS 4.5.4 to QTS 5?

Well, I have a TR-004 populated with 4 hdd connected to the TS-873 via USB-C to USB on the TS-873. After upgrading the FW on the TS-873 to QTS 5, the TR-004 stayed connected only for some time, perhaps for couple of hours (I only checked couple of hours later, could have been shorter).

There were also other problems with the TS-873 after the FW upgrade, namely whilst the TR-004 was still connected, "Restart" would fail and hang as the machine scrolls through the shutting down of each app. "Shutoff" would, however, progress normally.

After the drop-off of TR-004, both "Restart" and "Shutdown" would freeze as the unit (attempts to) scrolls through the shut down for each app.

After 6 attempts cycling through the whole FW upgrade process without improving the situation, I contacted Support but they did not have an immediate solution. I decided to downgrade and stick to QTS 4.5.4, which worked wonderfully as usual without any hiccups.

Anyone else had the same problem, or even a solution? Support advised that they would look into the matter and include a patch in their next iteration of QTS 5.

Yes QTS 5 is very bad for someone with a TR-004 I signed up to this forum just to seek help. As I have two TVS 463's with TR-004 connected with populated drives and they both have the same behavior. Shares drop of both windows and Apple machines. But Sadly enough both will not let you log in to the web interface for remote management after running for a day. I do notice if you unplugg the TR-004 it seems to run fine but have only tested up to 48 hours like this. So I have pushed both units back to 4.5 can someone please help :)

By the way I also notice that upgrading to 5 (applying both version) The Blue USB light no longer comes on while on QTS5 which was an indicator for me to unplug the expansion bay. Going back to 4.5 the latest version of 4 the Blue Light comes on AND as stated above all is working.

Yeah I understand that Dolbyman just thought maybe someone had solved and pulled a rabbit out of the hat.

Short of downgrades, I haven't seen any solutions for these USB issues in QTS 5 so far.

Hi All,

Last I understand from Qnap Support, they will look into the matter. Meantime, downgrade back to QTS 4.5.4 as Dolbyman has suggested. Then wait for update from Qnap Support.

I've had a ticket open with qnap for a few days with the same issue, they've recognised the problem and the dev team are going to fix in a new firmware soon.

Appears as though QTS 5 is merging usb devices into one device and writing to the wrong drives, causing them to fail and lockup the nas. Qnap have confirmed it with my nas setup, so hopefully shouldn't be waiting too long for the fix.

I had this issue too when I upgraded my TVS-473 with a TR-004 attached via usb.

I downgraded and, as others have reported resolved the issue.

So far I’ve confirmed this issue to exist on the following builds:
QTS 5.0.0.1808 Build 20211001
QTS 5.0.0.1853 build 20211114

I have some hope they’re zeroing in on this since there’s a specific release note in QTS 5.0.0.1853 build 20211114 talking about the TS-004. That’s ultimately why I thought about giving it a shot but still having the issue afterwards.

I’m going to keep an eye on the release notes before trying it again so hopefully they’re working through the regression testing on the TS-004 in the next few builds.

I’m in the process now of downgrading back to 4.5.4.1800 build 20210923.

I have installed the new firmware yesterday 5.0.0.1870 on my TVS-473 and still facing the same issue as described in those posts.

For an unknown reason, after a while the TR-004 is shown as disconnected.

When we try to display the folders using File Station Browser, we have no folder appearing.

The sync job stuck ...

When I turnoff the TR-004 the TVS-473 and QTS 5.0 returns to a normal state.

So the TR-004 is still unusable since the upgrade to to QTS 5.0 with any new firmware update included the latest 1870.

Does anybody still experience the same issue ?

I will consider a downgrade to the latest QTS 4 firmware.
Did anybody experience issues/side effects when downgrading ?
When we start the downgrade process a big warning
pops up informing that a downgrade could make the whole unstable.

Did you faces any issues after the downgrade ?

Thanks for your returns.

I’ve downgraded twice so far and the only thing I had to do after the downgrade was to re-enter my encryption keys for the drives to unlock. To be clear though, I don’t think that had anything to do with the downgrade process.

I think the bigger question you were asking was about data integrity. I did NOT have any data integrity issues.

I've written to Support again and, hopefully, they will expedite the work to resolve this issue. Otherwise, I'm stuck with the firmware version at 4.5.4.1800.
