TS-873A - Hardware compatibility

Post by oliver_nz »

Hi

Last post had to be deleted due to some nasty links being posted on it. So here I go again. Just for those wondering about HW compatibility here's what I am using. So far no issues:
  • QNAP TS-873A
  • Added 8GB ram (to a total of 16GB) used module Kingston Laptop ValueRAM DDR4 2666Mhz non ECC - CL19 - 1.2v (KVR26S19S8)
  • 4x WD Ultrastar HC330 10TB SATA 7.2K RPM 0B42266 512e
  • Intel X520 DA1 10Gig SFP+ 82599EN PCIe Gen2 x8 NIC
  • No-name M2 to PCIe Gen3 x4 adapter
  • Samsung EVO plus 970 - worked in both, internal PCIe Gen3 x1 port and PCIe Gen3 x4 card
  • Eaton 5E UPS (USB attached)
All working fine from what I can see. Have been using it for about 2w now.
Cheers
Oliver

I have the same hardware except for SSD and RAM module. For no apparent reason, my system is not working. Is this an issue with SSD or RAM. I'm using this module of RAM: https://www.getitequip.com/Nanya-Techno ... -3P-Memory

And SAMSUNG SM951 NVME 256 GB PCI-E M.2 SSD

Sorry for the late reply. Didn't see your post. The memory you linked is not an SO-DIMM. It shouldn't fit it is also not DDR4 I think. So that would never work. At least not in a TS-873A
The SSD shouldn't give you any issues.

Hi!

I was wondering what speeds you get with the Samsung EVO Plus 970 in the internal M2 slot. I'm having a clean setup only performed the install wizard and created an RAID1 set with two of the Samsung Evo Plus 970 drives. But the speedtest from within the Qnap doesn't go beyond de 550MB.

That is odd. Mine is on a separate card in a PCI slot (cheapo I still had). There it is somewhere between 2-2500mb/s. When I had it in the internal slot I think it was just off 1000mb/s. Remember internal slots are PCI 3.0 X1, Whereas the PCI slots are PCI 3.0 X4, which is what the 970 has.

Your 550mb/s seems a bit low. Is that what the disk test on the Qnap gives you? Not that I think it matters much but how full are the drives?

I'd definitely suggest a PCI card. The difference is worth it. You can get them for about $20 on AliExpress for a dual.

Oh strange, the X1 slot I understand. The Qnap was new out of the box running firmware 4.x i've performed an upgrade to 5.0.0.1986 and speeds are now arround 688MB with the disk test from within QTS. The test was performed on empty drives.

I didn't know you could use 'not compatibe' PCI cards. I've got an ‎Digitus DS-33170 PCI m2 nvme card. I'll try if this card works in the qnap. Thxs!

Wanted to confirm that the PCI card works, thanks for the tip! Speed of the Evo Plu970 in the Digitus PCI adapter are now arround 3200MB p/s

Edit: The card can only be used as cache drive. Qnap doesn't support third party PCI cards in combination with a storage pool. The option is greyed out.
