TS459pro+ upgrade

Post by guusi »

I have an old TS459pro+. It is no longer supported by QTS. However it works well is quiet etc.

I use my QNAP as a raid 0 file server at home. ie no transcoding no high availability etc.
I used to run the squeezebox LTS but this has since moved to a raspberry pi.

I was thinking of rebuilding with either trueNas or debian/ubuntu.

The unit uses an intel Atom processor.

What memory size is recommended? The 1GB ram would probably need an upgrade.

Anyone done down this path before?

Afaik the TS-x59 series (I have some still running for backup) supports 2 (or 3) GB RAM at maximum.
No idea, if this is sufficient for trueNAS, I am still running QTS with latest patch from March 2022.

Thanks my last upgrade was a year ago or so.
I thought that would have been a last ever.

An QTS upgrade would definitely be the easier option.

With the basic needs of the NAS, is there a specific issue you are trying to resolve and feel the memory upgrade would address?

If your NAS is not internet-facing, security updates, if that is what you are after, are less important, particularly if you have a robust backup strategy.
