6TB SATA drive USB detection issue

Post by jamieburchell »

Hello

When I insert either one of my 6TB IronWolf SATA drives in my USB 3 enclosure (1 partition, EXT4) it does not show up under /dev/sde.

dmesg shows:

Code: Select all

[1542523.132965] [usb.002.011] /sys/devices/platform/soc/fd800000.pcie-external0/pci0001:00/0001:00:00.0/0001:01:00.0/usb2/2-4 added.
[1542545.589555] usb 2-4: reset SuperSpeed USB device number 11 using xhci_hcd
[1542577.380773] usb 2-4: USB disconnect, device number 11
If I power off the USB enclosure and power it back on, the same thing happens.

If I pull the USB cable and re-insert it, the drives are detected properly:

Code: Select all

[1542383.158926] [usb.002.008] /sys/devices/platform/soc/fd800000.pcie-external0/pci0001:00/0001:00:00.0/0001:01:00.0/usb2/2-4 removed.

I can also simulate this physical cable removal and re-insertion by doing the following:

Code: Select all

echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/soc/fd800000.pcie-external0/pci0001:00/0001:00:00.0/0001:01:00.0/usb2/2-4/authorized
echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/soc/fd800000.pcie-external0/pci0001:00/0001:00:00.0/0001:01:00.0/usb2/2-4/authorized
But curiously, all of my other smaller drives are detected properly and mounted without needing to do this. Is this some sort of driver/firmware bug?

Thanks
Jamie

Would be best to create a support ticket and report this.

I have both a 6TB WD Red and a 8TB Seagate Ironwolf (both encrypted EXT4 partition) running in external enclosures without your symptons, working from first startup. Have you tried with different USB cable and/or different USB port on NAS already?

What is the make and model of the USB3 enclosure?
What is the power supply max output rated voltage and current?
Start swapping hardware, like a brand new Amazon Basics USB3 SS10 cable, rated for 10 Gbps.
