Which compatible CPUs are available to upgrade a TS470

Post by HongKongRob »

Hi folks

I have a TS470 which has provided many great years of service and continues to do so. I upgraded the RAM from 2GB to 10GB a couple of years ago and my trusty TS470 generally runs just great. But the TS470 still has the original Intel Celeron CPU G550 2.6 GHz processor which frequently runs at over 90% capacity. I think the reason is that my Raid 1 HDDs are encrypted and the encryption overwhelms the poor little Celeron. So I think it is time to take a deep breath and try to upgrade the processor. I have found this really useful thread by jojetski where he explains in detail how he upgraded the processor in his TS470.

viewtopic.php?t=94660

The thing is the thread is already 8 years old and I'm not sure that I can still buy the Intel I7 3770T processor which jojetski used for his upgrade.

So my question is simple: please how may I find out which compatible Intel processors are currently available that I can use to upgrade my aged TS470? If the answer is that my TS470 is over the hill and that no currently available processors are compatible then that would be useful information too.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There will be no current CPU for this very outdated socket

Check ebay (etc) for used processors

The TS-x70 series can use any Ivy Bridge desktop CPU.

I used an i7-3770S and i7-3770 in my TS-670Pro & TS-870Pro respectively when I had those units.

Keep in mind that if you upgrade to a higher TDP CPU you will need to make sure you have sufficient air flow and ambient air temp of 26c or lower, otherwise the CPU and system will run hot - and heat is a real killing force for electronics. You should upgrade the exhaust fan if you use a CPU with a TDP higher than 45 W.

One final thought; if you do upgrade the CPU, do not use as much thermal grease as used by jojetski. Only a thin film of thermal grease is required as the grease is meant to fill in the microscopic gaps of air between the metal surfaces. Having the grease between the contact points of the metal surfaces reduces thermal conductivity.

Thank you so much dolbyman and jaysona for your responses and advice.

From checking out the cpu-list.com website my guess was that the 3770T was more or less the last in the series of i7 processors with the LGA 1155 socket. Since jojetski had successfully used the 3770T it follows that any Ivy Bridge processor should be OK and that next generation CPUs will even fit the LGA 1155 socket set. But your confirmation gives me extra confidence.

As you can probably guess from my name, I am in Hong Kong which is not exactly a climate conducive to high TDP processors. So I shall go with the i3770T which at 45W is the i7 with the lowest TDP. I'll remember to go easy on the grease.

Although it is not possible to buy a brand new i7-3770T, I have seen that there are many second hand available on eBay.

Thank you both once again.

Just a note to say that I purchased an i7-3770T CPU on eBay for USD 138. Installed following joejetski's instructions but with a lot less thermal paste :) My TS470 now positively purrs like a little ** cat. CPU utilisation barely hits 20%. I've noticed some performance improvements even for my modest set up. Antivirus scans used to take 3, sometimes 4 hours to complete - they now take just 90 minutes.

One interesting point to note is that QFinder now recognises my machine as a TS470 Pro and TS470 Pro flashes on the LED screen at start up (I in fact purchased the unit when brand new as a TS470).

Next step when I'm feeling brave is manually to install QTS 5.0. QNAP previously said that due to kernel limitations 4.3.6 would be the last firmware upgrade for the TS470 - but that would have been based on the CPUs installed by QNAP at the time. So far as I can tell, the hardware specs of my upgraded TS470 at least match that of, say, the TS453s in terms of CPU specification and RAM. So I am minded to download the QTS 5.0 zip file from the QNAP site by asking for the operating system for TS453s and can then try to select that file manually to install in my TS470 with upgraded CPU and RAM.

The non-pro line of the TS-x70 series have a Sandy Bridge Celeron CPU, the Pro series have an Ivy Bridge Core i3 CPU. QTS just displays the NAS type based on the Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge CPU installed.

I briefly tried (I only spent a few hours ding this) installing a different version of QTS on my TS-870, it did not go well. There were never ending error messages about missing and unlinked library files, drivers not present for certain chips, etc. I didn't pursue it much since thee is nothing in QTS 5.x that I need that is not already available in QTS 4.3.6

Thanks so much jaysona for sharing about your experience with QTS 5. I too was of the view that 4.3.6 had 80% of the functionality of 5.x and most of the remaining 20% was not of interest to me. Since my tech ability is very limited and based on your experience I have decided not to pursue this. Thanks once again.
