Strange SSD Issue in TS-h973ax

Post by RickyHunter »

Hi there.
It'll be a little long because I'm trying to explain everything in detail.

SYSTEM:
TS-h973ax, with 32 GB of ECC RAM
3xHDDs in slot 1,2,3 (Raid 5) >>> storage (storage pool2)
2xSabrent NVME 1TB via Qnap Adapter in slot S1 and S2 (Raid 0) >>> Read Cache
2xSamsung 850 EVO in slot S3 and S4 (Raid 1) >>> System (storage pool1)

I'm finishing the space on the storage pool1 (the Samsung SSDs) so I thought to substitute them with other 2 SSDs I already have. They are Samsung 860 EVO 500GB, bought together and actually working on a Raid0 enclosure. I checked their compatibility and they are OK.

So I took them and I exchanged one by one the 850s, waiting for the rebuilding to finish.
First disk: OK.
Second disk: not recognized.

So I did quite a lot of tryouts. Let's call:
A=850 disk1
B=850 disk2
C=860 disk1
D=860 disk2

Starting from the beginning, I did...
0) original setup:
A in S3
B in S4
everything ok

1) first attempt:
C in S3
B in S4
Rebuild ok

then
D in S4 >>> not recognized

2) returned to original setup then
A in S3
D in S4
rebuild OK

then C in S3 (that should already have the correct data) >>> not recognized

3) Then I switched D and C:
D in S3 >>> Recognised and ok
C in S4 >>> NOT recognised

then A in S4: everything OK

So now in each of the SSD I have the same exact data.
Conclusions:
If I use only 250 GB SSDs everything works fine.
If I mix 500 GB and 250 GB, everything works fine (but I can't expand the raid). Each 500 GB works if not in conjunction with the other.
If I use only 500 GB SSDs, only one is recognised

I also rebooted before some of the tests.
Any thoughts about what's happening and how I could solve this riddle?
Thanks in advance.

Strange SSD Issue in TS-h973ax

Post by Gaudi »

I am unsure if this is your case, but some users have reported that there is an issue with the implementation to read NVME drives serial numbers.
So if yours have almost identical serials, this could be the issue.
I am on my mobile phone, so unable to post the mentioned thread, but a quick search could help.

Folks, I'm not talking about m.2 issues... I'm talking about normal SSDs issues.
Using them in their dedicated slots: S3 and S4.

The NVMEs in the adapters are working great.

Yep, raise a support call with QNAP and make sure your SSD's are listed on the compatibility list
