TS-873-8G - 10g expansion help

Post by filovirus »

Hello,

I have a TS-873-8G and would like to add in a 10g single or possibly dual port nic, preferably intel, but other chipset vendors are ok provided I don't have much trouble. I have struggled to long with gig transfer speeds of tons of unencrypted photos. As of now, I use a unifi pro switch that has four SFP+ ports that I am not using. Since my Cat 6 run is only about 10-12 meters to my office, I am hoping I could add in a full height 10g nic into the office PC and one into the TS-873. I think then I would only need to find SFP+ modules that are RJ-45 and both compatible between the chipset of my nic and the unifi switch SFP+.

Hoping someone could help me work through this. I don't want to drop 200-300 per nic, and would instead like to find a compatible card off ebay for both the PC and the QNAP. 50-100 per NIC is my goal.

I have never used an SFP+ module before, so I would like to make sure I am not having to return something if I make a mistake and choose poorly.

Once I get the networking updated, then I may consider dropping in a couple nvme ssd for read write cache.

Thank you

I bought two QNAP QXG-10G1T cards. Added one to the TS-673A and one to my Dell Precision 3650.

Both connected to my Unifi USW Aggregation at 10Gb. before connecting both cards I added them both to the Dell and updated the firmware supplied by Marvell. MTU set at 9014 on PC, 9000 on NAS and Jumbo frames enabled across the unifi network.

as to SFP's, I used these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BRG3Q2W

below is the screenshot of the partial network layout

I got the whole idea of this from this writeup: https://gameandtechfocus.com/networkuni ... on-review/

Thank you for your reply. With the extra expense of SFP+ modules, around 50-60 dollars for each RJ-45 male connection, I am beginning to consider using a twinax from the switch to the QNAP and find an SFP+ nic for the QNAP. I believe this card meets the compatibility, but I do not see any source for a qnap proprietary? flat bracket that would allow me to attach it. I may need to reach out to qnap support. I have read that some have used a dremel to cut off the tab mount and make the bracket flat.

The NIC card for the QNAP have to be on the compatibility list because they have been tested and the QTS/QuTS firmware contains the Linux drivers for them.
