TVS-872XU-RP dead - red light inside

Post by HiVolt »

I moved a TVS-872XU-RP unit from one location to another, but it was sitting on a shelf for 6 months. I tried to plug it in again and starting it, but it does nothing.

The lights in the front don't illuminate and when the power is attached to either power supplies there is a brief fan noise for like a split second, then nothing. Swapping either power supply in its slot results in the same. When I open the top cover, there is a red light by the motherboard powersupply connector. When I attach the power cord with the cover off, the light briefly turns on green, then quickly to red.

I removed all the hard drive bays, the 10gig adapter card, and I have re-seated all the power connectors as well as the RAM. in fact it does the same with the RAM inserted or not.

Is there any other troubleshooting I can perform to isolate the issue? or is the motherboard dead?

Thanks for any advice.

Best to open a ticket with QNAP, hopefully the x72XU-RP mobos don’t have a design/manufacturing flaw similar to the early rev mobos used in tower x72 series.

There was another thread about one of the rackmount x72 dying the same death the other day

Yeah this is the rackmount unit... Exact same symptoms (and similar troubleshooting steps).

Sounds like its pooched. I have created a ticket with QNAP, see what they say.

Does anyone know the average turnaround of a repair at QNAP? they received it almost 2 weeks ago, status is still at "Repairing".

This is my first encounter with a repair with them.

We know neither turnaround nor repair center location (you have provided none) .. so that is a "no" for both

I guess I should have said it went to Pomona California. I'm not looking for any exact time, just a ballpark figure from someone who may have had something repaired there, i guess this will probably be a motherboard replacement.

We just discovered in another thread, that chip replacement does not grant a long-term fix, so you will probably get a new board (with updated revision), no idea if they have stock

Have you asked them via you support case ?

Would you be so kind as to post the link to the thread?

Thanks

Thanks... Now i'm actually worried if I actually wanna use this unit after its repaired, with there being so many failures.
I guess I'll have to see what the replacement is, if its a newer revision motherboard...

That thread is huge, have you seen any reports of what a good motherboard revision is for the rack unit? The one I had in my unit was a TVS-x72XU v1.2

Revisions 1.7 and up seem to be safe...well, IF QNAP found the issue and made changes to the PCB, we can only guess

Yeah hope to receive that. I'm still waiting, no reason to ask now because of the holidays but i will inquire after the new year what the deal is.

Well, interesting turn of events, it appears that QNAP has replaced my unit with a TS-883XU-RP.

I don't have it in hand yet, it's on the way, but that's what the RMA report says.

It appears to be of similar class except with a Xeon E vs an i3, but really its an 8th gen LGA 1151 Xeon so calling it one is pretty funny. I guess the only bonus is ECC memory.

It appears to be a current product, and the motherboard layout looks very similar from the documentation, so I hope they fixed the issues with this model.
