TVS-H474 cpu upgrade (from Pentium Gold G7400 to i7-12700T)

Post by rexet » Sun Jan 22, 2023 10:23 pm

Hello,

I bought a brand new QNAP TVS-H474 and I decided to explore some upgrade options.

I started with the RAM and I am now running the following 64Go kit without any issue:
- Crucial RAM 64Go Kit (2x32Go) DDR4 3200MHz CL22 (ref CT2K32G4SFD832A)

This H474 NAS come with a Pentium Gold G7400 and QNAP is currently not offering any CPU alternative for this 4-bays model.
Since I wanted a more powerful CPU without having to jump on a bigger 6 or 8 bays model, I decided to upgrade the CPU myself.
The objective was to find a more powerful CPU from the same 12th Intel gen with the same socket while trying to remain within the same TDP range to avoid any temperature issue.

I have opted for the the i7-12700T:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... tions.html

The installation process was easy and my QNAP TVS-H474 is booting just fine with its brand new i7-12700T.

I still have to monitor if the system is stable (so far so good).

But there is one thing that intrigues me. The System Status recognizes the CPU as a 12700T but describes it with a max speed of 1640 Mhz as you can see the screenshot bellow.
It is normal?

First I don't know what "max speed" QNAP is refereing to. Is it the Max Turbo Frequency ? Performance-core Max Turbo Frequency ? Efficient-core Max Turbo Frequency ?
And whatever it is, it doesn't seem to match any speed I am reading on the 12700T specs sheets:
Total Cores: 12
# of Performance-cores: 8
# of Efficient-cores: 4
Total Threads: 20
Max Turbo Frequency: 4.70 GHz
Intel® Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 Frequency: 4.70 GHz
Performance-core Max Turbo Frequency: 4.60 GHz
Efficient-core Max Turbo Frequency: 3.40 GHz
Performance-core Base Frequency: 1.40 GHz
Efficient-core Base Frequency: 1.00 GHz
Cache 25 MB Intel® Smart Cache
Total L2 Cache: 12 MB
Processor Base Power: 35 W
Maximum Turbo Power: 99 W
Maybe it is a BIOS issue and this NAS just doesn't support thic CPU?
Maybe my CPU is deffective?

Any idea? :)

it is more likely the OS or Bios does not have the correct CPU code the i7-12700T. maybe there is a newer Bios revision, but it would be hard to know for sure.

Damn.
From what I read I can't expect Qnap to add new CPU support in their BIOS or Firmware since they don't support any upgrade out of what they officialy propose :(

I know that Qnap has announced the incoming availability of their 874 with i7 and i9.
Maybe this new units with i7 and i9 will come with a new firmware that will support my own CPU?
I'm torn between selling this CPU or just wait...

I have read that Qnap is not providing any Bios update files for their units (whereas they provide the guide on how to update the bios).

Not sure a simple firmware update can help.

I have the feeling I won’t be able to benefit from this CPU.
I guess I have to sell it.

What do you think?

possibly. you really need either the i5 or i7 from the bigger models but it needs to be the correct model of cpu. T? K? who knows.

I think I will go with the i5 12400 because it is already used in some Qnap x74 unit so I would assume the bios and firmware already support it.

Ok I found someone to sell the 12700T to and I ordered a 12400 instead. I will let the forum knows how the upgrade went.

I really hope it will be ok this time cause it starting to cost me lot of money ahaha !
