Limited to 2Gb transfer (SOLVED)

Post by johnun »

I am experiencing a bottleneck with the QNAP 10GbE switch.
When the computer is connected via the switch, transfer tests have been capped at 2Gb/s.
Trying to see if the NAS is the problem, I have both connect directly to the NAS itself and the issue disappears.
I am unable to keep this workaround setup because the computers are unable to access the internet if connected directly to the NAS.

During these tests, when connected via the network switch, running the Blackmagic Design Disk Speed Test (BMD-DST) and OpenSpeedTest (OST) I get the following results:

Note: I ran these individually at different times to prevent network congestion. Test were done on 2x NVMe drives in raid 0, topping off at over 1.5GB/s on the qcli_storage benchmark.

Setup 01 - PC via switch BMD-DST ~250MB/s, OST ~2.0Gb/s | Laptop via switch BMD-DST - ~250 MB/s, OST ~2.0Gb/s
Setup 02 - PC direct BMD-DST ~300MB/s, OST - ~2.4GB/s | Laptop direct BMD-DST - ~1150MB/s, OST ~9.2Gb/s

Is there anything I can do to keep the results from Setup 02 without directly connecting to the NAS?

The Hardware
switch = QSW-2104-2S-US
nas = TS-1232PXU-RP-4G-US
dock = OWCTB3DKPRO
adapter = TL-SM5310-T
laptop = MacBook Pro M2 Max
pc = custom PC with 2.5 Gbe on motherboard

Setup 01 - via Switch
switch (SFP port 01) <-- SFP cable --> nas (SFP port 01)
switch (SFP port 02) <-- adapter - Cat6e cable --> dock <-- thunderbolt 3 --> laptop
switch (RJ45 port 02) <-- Cat6e cable --> pc

Setup 02 - direct
switch (SFP port 01) <-- SFP cable --> nas (SFP port 01)
nas (RJ45 port 01) <-- Cat6e cable --> pc
nas (SFP port 02) <-- adapter -- Cat6e cable --> dock <-- thunderbolt 3 --> laptop

Note: The same cables have been used throughout testing. All 6ft / 2m or under in length

I have found OpenSpeedTest to have inconsistent results anytime I have tested and they dont necessarily equate to the same with iperf or a standard file copy.

better using iperf tbh. what are you throughput tests using say a 10gb file, using standard SMB copy from one PC to NAS share and back again?

are you using SMBv3 since this is proven to be faster and are you using an MTU size of 9000?

there is a nice article here regarding using different protocols and speed stats: https://photographylife.com/afp-vs-nfs- ... erformance

Doing the iperf3 and AJA speed tests

Setup 01 - iperf (Gbs) 2.36 sender, 2.35 receiver | AJA (MBs) 229 up, 220 down
Setup 02 - iperf (Gbs) 6.22 sender, 6.20 receiver | AJA (MBs) 371 up, 935 down

QNAP settings
Highest SMB version = SMB 3.0

...

update: I have solved the issue by disabling Trunking. There was a Cat6e going from a 2.5Gbe port on the NAS to a 2.5Gbe port on the switch.
I noticed the traffic on the 10Gbe was near 0 at Setup 01.
