TX401 NIC in a TS-664?

Post by togglewoggle »

How do I figure out what 10G network cards (other than the ones listed on the compatibility list) would work in my TS-664 NAS? (I've looked at all the options on the compatibility list and they're all out of stock down here in New Zealand)
Would a TX401 work?

Or alternatively - if I put in a QXG-2G2T-I225 for another 2x 2.5G, could I port-trunk all 4 2.5G ports to get 10G?

Trunking is no magic..you can't just combine a bunch of ports and multiply the bandwidth ..unless your client also has 4x cards and supports multichannel SMB

Best to open a ticket with QNAP and see where to get compatible models for your market

Well, port trunking worked like a charm with the 2 built-in ports. I connected them both to the switch and got double the speed - it seemed so easy - hence my question if this would work with 4 ports across 2 cards as well? 🙂

2 trunked ports with clients connected as ..... what ?

1x 1GbE card (magic?)
2x 1GbE card (multichannel SMB?) OR multiple clients with each 1xGbE
1x 2.5-10GbE card (magic again!)

I just tested a generic adapter with the 5GbE chipset that QNAP used in their own 5GbE adapter and it was not recognized by 2 QNAP's I tested this on (TS-853BU and TBS-453DX)

viewtopic.php?f=182&t=169991

So hence the contacting QNAP part .. they like to pull/restrict support for generic hardware

Yeah, maybe I should just order one of the supported ones and wait instead of going through the trouble...

The background is that I'm thinking about upgrading my network to 10G. My testing of port trunking is admittedly limited - what I did was the following: I connected both ports to the switch (1GbE) and realised that I now have two IP addresses for the NAS. I tested the speed with 2PCs simultaneously (both connected to the same IP) and saw that they were sharing the bandwidth. Then I set up port trunking and combined both under a single adapter (now both after combined under only 1IP to connect to) and tested again and now both PCs got up to a full 1G over GbE!

So now my idea was to buy a 10G NIC (like the TLink TX401 one) for both PCs, get something for the NAS that can get it up to 10G and hook it all up to something like the TLink 5-port 10G switch.

Yes that multiple clients can then do full bandwidth with trunking is correct.

QNAP really needs to offer some solutions for their ongoing low stock on compatible LAN cards

Only thing remotely attainable (from amazon Australia) seems to be the 5GbE USB adapter

Maybe @OneCD has some tips and tricks for you guys down there?

Thanks for trying! :)

The QNA-UC5G1T doesn't seem to be getting much love, hm? It says Win11 and no future versions are supported and they dropped Mac support entirely at some point?
I think I'll just try and order a QXG-10G1T somewhere...

Interesting. QNAPSource NZ says the QNAP QXG-10G1T is end of life and won't be available anymore. :/

Ooph you guys are paying through the nose down there

https://www.qnapsource.nz/product/qnap-qxg-10g2t-x710/

I had one of these 'free' in my 1288X .. maybe I should take it out and keep it for resale (I have a couple of QXG-10G1T I decommissioned, as they do not work in low airflow DELL CAD workstations, they overheat)

Everything is expensive down here... But on the positive side we're in the top 5 countries likely to survive the apocalypse!

Heard back from a retailer - apparently the offical replacement is the QXG-10G2TB and it has a lead time of 30 days. :/
