The inner module is accessible very carefully with your fingers. The outside module requires the cover to come off. There are three screws then is slides out towards the back. I used Kingston HyperX Impact Black 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3L CL9 SODIMM 1.35V Laptop Memory (HX316LS9IBK2/16) memory in mine

Did you ever find out if a TB2 expansion card could be used in the TVS-871 unit?

If you find a source for the customized TB2 add-in card any TVS-x71 could be upgraded.

The x71 motherboard`s PCIe Gen2 x4 slot has a 36 pin PCI Extension connector (22 + 14) that obviously includes the GPIO and DisplayPort signals needed for Thunderbolt. So the QNAP Thunderbold AIC is a customized adapter that only fits the x71.

...permitting the firmware does not require a T-model (not by Henry Ford) in the factory configuration to enable the TB2 interfaces.

it doesn`t require anything else. The Init script "/etc/init.d/thunderbolt.sh" issues "/sbin/hal_app --check_tbt_support" for detecting Thunderbolt.

Or it does detect the NAS hardware model capabilities - like being an eight bay NAS ... for example, a board installed on an eight bay does not recognize a say 12 bay back-plane having more then eight slots - because this is all part of the hardware config in HAL at manufacturing time.

So, I am wondering if the TX-500P expansion enclosure uses that card? If so it might be worth buying just for that card. Does anyone Know?

Anyone attempt to upgrade the TVS-471 CPU to a Core i5 4690.... or any other non-factory CPU for that matter?

I feel any low-profile Thunderbolt 2 AIC could be used if you manage to connect the GPIO pins (TBT header).

The ASRock AIC might be a good candidate.
DSL5320 (2C/1P) instead of DSL5520 (4C/2P) so you cannot chain the output but who cares? There's a DP-out connector on the TVS-X71 (QW56) mainboard that could be used to feed the DP 1.2 in-port.

The ASRock adapter runs a 5-pin header with 3 GPIO pins to the motherboard.
-Ground
-Platform Sequence Control 1
-Platform Sequence Control 2
-Plug Event
-Power

This Magma UPGTB2 PCIe adapter has 2 Thunderbolt ports and a 3-pin connection to the motherboard. Looks like it has no DP-in connector.

This question has already been answered. There is no plug and play substitute for the QNAP Thunderbold adapter. Looks like it's manufactured by IEI Integration Corp., formerly ICP Electronics Inc.

The x71 motherboard`s PCIe Gen2 x4 slot has a 36 pin PCI Extension connector (22 + 14 pins, physically PCIe x1) that obviously includes the GPIO and DisplayPort signals needed for Thunderbolt. So the QNAP Thunderbold AIC is a customized adapter that only fits the x71.

However, if you manage to connect the three GPIO pins, any AIC (add-in card) might work.

Only three entries above you will find some helpful links to inform yourself about the basics of Thunderbolt. Even the usage of the GPIO pins that is kept very short by Intel is referenced through its patent application.

So, what is the problem actually getting an AIC from Qnap?
TVS-h1688x 2xm.2 1TB, 12x16TB EXOS, TVS-872n 2xM.2 1TB, 8x16TB EXOS (Currently dead... pending QNAP Support)
