Disk I/O error on external USB drive since firmware 4.3.3 on HS-251

Post by wolfsbein »

Dear All,

I use a 1 TB WD portable USB3 drive (2.5') on my HS-251 NAS to sync files to OneDrive via the Hybrid Backup Sync App (in combination with the Cloud Backup Sync beta App). Everything worked fine until the upgrade to the latest 4.3.3 firmware.
Since then the sync job aborts in irregular intervals (5 to 18 hours) with a disk I/O error message. Restarting the job only works after removing the external drive and reconnecting. Nevertheless the drive is accessible to the NAS. It is possible to read and write files. On a Windows 10 machine this behavior cannot be reproduced.

Any ideas? Could it be the new firmware is sending external devices to sleep mode by mistake? Thank you very much.

best to report this via ticket..if it started in 4.3.3 they need to know about it to fix it

An additional observation: the last couple of job aborts were between 3:00 and 3:02 a.m. so it seems not that random. What could that possibly be? My NAS is not scheduled for automated restart, standby or similar.

Thanks for the hint. Found it. /sbin/vs_refresh is causing the i/o error, just confirmed that. Now I am not a Linux expert and don't know if this is a bug or whatever. Do you think I could at least limit the frequency of this job to once a week, or is the job too important?

i think this is the storage space update script...it might use eztta cpu and i/o, but should not kill external drive access..please report it to qnap for a fix

Hi
I also have had multiple USB issues since upgrading to 4.3.3 on my QNAP TS-563
It seems to me that with firmware 4.3.3 at least on my QNAP, Backup Station has lost the ability to tell what needs syncing and what doesn't and just rewrites everything
I didn't notice at first as I don't keep all that close an eye on it but every backup to External drives through Backup Station was suddenly taking ages
I only noticed in the end because one of my USB drives carked it ... I imagine from rewriting 4TB every night which USB drives are generally not designed for
Anyway ... If you hit this issue I found that reverting to firmware 4.2.5 fixed it with my QNAP TS-563
I also have an open Ticket with QNAP about this

Regarding the not-needed rewriting as of 4.3.3, I discovered that when I unticked the "detect sparse files" option in my RTRR job between two Qnap's this was solved. Worth a try for a job to an external usb drive I guess. I haven't updated my external usb drives yet using the new firmware, as they are stored at my brother's place.

Thanks, I upgraded again to 4.3.3 as Qnap support asked me to and tried that fix
Interestingly it seemed to fix the backup to a 1TB USB drive I had but not 2 others to 2TB and 4TB USB drives
So I have downgraded to 4.2.5 again for the moment

It seems the QNAP TS-112P QTS 4.3.3.0210 Build 20170606 firmware has a introduced a problem with WD (Western Digital) My Book Essential (USB 3.0) external drives using robocopy (from Windows 7/10 pc) to copy files from internal volume to external drives attached to QNAP TS-112P USB port. See below ERROR 50 (0x00000032) Changing File Attributes. The previous release 4.2.4 build 20170313 works ok. I have tried a different WD (Western Digital) My Book Essential (USB 3.0) external drive which also has problem.

I also note the sometimes since updating to QTS 4.3.3.0210 Build 20170606 sometimes the QNAP TS-112P volume can not be seen by a Windows 7/10 pc. When this error occurs the QNAP TS-112P network is ok because the VPN and web logins functions are ok. Restarting QNAP TS-112P fixes 'can not be seen by a Windows 7/10 pc' problem only for few hours.

The OP issue is addressed in 4.3.3.0229 build 20170624
[Fixes]
- No disk I/O errors occur when an external storage device is selected as the destination for cloud-to-local sync jobs on Hybrid Backup Sync.

re robocopy errors copying from NAS to external drive I raised a ticket immediately and reply was QNAP dont support robocopy - I replied and asked them to look at problem - reply now asking product manager if robocopy supported or not
Firmware Update] System updated successfully from 4.3.3.0229(20170624) to 4.3.3.0238(20170703) but has not fixed robocopy problem

Support can be so funny. The robocopy is a standard Windows utility replacing the legacy xcopy. the only question can be when it will work with robocopy.

re robocopy errors copying from NAS to external drive I raised a ticket immediately and reply was QNAP dont officially support robocopy - 4.3.3.0299 still fails - now passed to 2 line support after months of asking QNAP to test and fix
