TS-251+ Memory Upgrade - Single 8GB module

Post by osprey23 »

Anyone tried to replace the on-board 2GB with a single 8GB before? Would it work? I am thinking of swapping it with a 8GB so that I can consider upgrading it to 16GB if I need to.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Apparently others have tried it with success. It may also depend on brand - all I have available is Corsair ValueSelect. The 8gb stick only shows up as 4gb on the Nas. Also, I can't get any HDMI output on Linux Station or HD Station most of the time with the Corsair memory.
Do a search on this forum - some people have put in 2 8Gb sticks. That seems overkill for me though. Heading out to buy some Kingston.
From what I've read the following should work:
Kingston - KVR16LS11/8
Crucial - CT102464BF160B

Others appear to have had success with Corsair ValueSelect, I have not.

Hope this helps.

I apologize for a bit of confusion - it was a 4gb Corsair ValueSelect stick of ram not 8gb. I can verify that a Kingston 4gb (KVR16LS11/4) works fine. I bet that the 8gb stick will work as well.

QNAP answered me:

Hello Leonardo,

We do not advise it. QNAP asks to install QNAP memory with the QNAP sticker. We have many tickets with sporadic reboots or other problems, when developers see in the dumplogs that the memory is not the one that is supposed to immediately ask for the memory that comes with the NAS to be installed.

Some models come with Kingston, but they are a few, and not their model, the rest are usually trancend, ADATA, and others that I do not know.

I know there are clients that install their memory that is not QNAP and it works correctly, but when they open a case that can be related to memory, the first thing that is asked is to install the modules that came with the NAS.

Best regards,

Just to say:
Qnap TS-251+ Ram Upgrade to 16GB (8+8GB) with
8gb ddr3l-1600 pc3l-12800 1600mhz Samsung m471b1g73db0-yk0 modules.

100% working well.

Often 8+8GB work fine even though QNAP and the CPU support only 8 GB.

Hey Osprey,
I just upgraded my TS-251, removing the single 2Gb stick, and installed 2 x 4Gb sticks.
Crucial DDR3L - 1600 SODIMM, CT51264BF160B.
Everything works well.
Maybe consider that, rather than a single stick?
Cheers,
Cheers,
Andy.

That seems to be an interesting option to be able to update later to 16 GB.

@anotherandy - what firmware have you got on yours? I've just installed 2 of the crucial sticks and the NAS won't boot unless I go back to the original 2gb. Wondering if it is a NAS issue or a ram problem. The ram is new so I don't think its that

I have got two CT102464BF160B.C16 modules and no problems with the TS-251+ / 4.3.6.0875 firmware. There's a firmware update available to address some issues which shouldn't change the RAM handling.
Does it boot with one module?

For each module:

Code: Select all

Size: 8192 MB
Type: DDR3
Speed: 1600 MT/s
Part Number: CT102464BF160B.C16
Configured Clock Speed: 1333 MT/s
Voltage: 1.35 V - 1.5 V
Configured Voltage: 1.35 V

Hello folks,
I have TS-251+ / 2GB RAM version, the factory installed module is Transcend TS256MSK64W6N - 2GB DDR3L 1600 SO-DIMM, the memoru chips are produced from Samsung. On local market I have managed to find one 4GB module TS512MSKV64V6H, compared to the "original" and recommended by QNAP:
https://shop.qnap.com/?route=product/pr ... nguage=USE
https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/ts-251%2B
the only difference is in the third symbol from behind, the one that I have bought is ending on 64V6H, but the recommended is ending on 64W6H. So, when I change the existing 2 GB module on slot 1, with mine 4GB module again on slot 1 the NAS doesn't boot, there is no sound indication of booting, there is no HDD activity. When return the 2 GB module on Slot1 everything is OK. I want to note that I have never tried the combination of 2GB on Slot 1 and 4GB on slot 2, or vice versa, because I have read that the modules on the slots should be the same.
Now I'm wondering, does the NAS support 4 GB of RAM, no matter if they are 2+2 GB on both slots, or one 4 GB on single slot, or the only two options are 2 GB (sibgle slot) and 8 GB (4+4 on both slots)?
What could be the reason for that behavior, unsupported module because of that difference in one symbol , or just TS-251+ is looking only for 2 or 8 GB of RAM and every difference of that is unsupported and lead to that, fail to boot?
Could you please share your thoughts, if any one has success with 4GB RAM on that model? If I try with the vendors mentioned above like Crucial or Kingston in 4+4 G combination could be more successful, the nas is with Firmware version 4.3.6.1070 Build 20190919.
thanks in advance for your answers

the "local market" module could either be incompatible or just broken

dual channel mixing is not always impossible. I have a 2GB and 8GB module mixed in my 951x ..rock solid .. probably not the best dual channel speed..but it works
