M.2 SSD temperature is over 70 ºC

Post by eliodeo »

Hi,

I installed two M.2 SSD two days ago on my TVS-673. I've also put the heatsinks on top of the SSD controllers...

However, every morning around 6.30 I'm getting the following notification

[Disk S.M.A.R.T.] Host: M.2 SSD 1 temperature is over 70 ºC, current temperature is 72 ºC.

Is there any process scheduled at that time that make use of my SSD? How can avoid situations like the one here?

Thx
Elio

Welcome Elio,

There are a multitude to things that could be causing that: backups, snapshots, overnight downloads, qsirch indexing, SMART scans, etc. Basically anything using disk heavily.

Depending on how your ventilation is, I have my SYSTEM fans set to run at about 50%. That seems to help keep the m.2's a little cooler overall.

yes I'm using the QNAP ones. These are the temp values right now

CPU temperature 53°C / 127°F
System temperature 39°C / 102°F
M.2 SSD 1 controller temperature 60°C / 140°F
M.2 SSD 1 module temperature 49°C / 120°F
M.2 SSD 2 controller temperature 53°C / 127°F
M.2 SSD 2 module temperature 40°C / 104°F

The SSD controllers never reach 70°C during the day when I mostly use the NAS. However, this morning (same yesterday morning) I got the warning message. So I was wondering how can I monitor which process was causing the SSD to get hot.
