RAID 50 compatible NAS devices

Post by 123tomek »

Which of the following devices are surely compatible with RAID 50:
- TVS-673-8G
- TVS-671-i3-4G
- TS-653B-8G
- TVS-663-8G

Do they all support the same 10G expansion cards?

Did you bother to check the specs on these on the QNAP web site?

For example the x73 series states:

4-Bay: RAID 0,1, 5, 6, 10, 5 + hot spare, JBOD, single
6- & 8-Bay: RAID 0,1, 5, 6, 10, + hot spare, JBOD single
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

NAS: TVS-882BR | F/W: 5.0.1.2346 | 40GB | 2 x 1TB M.2 SATA RAID 1 (System/VMs) | 3 x 1TB M.2 NMVe QM2-4P-384A RAID 5 (cache) | 5 x 14TB Exos HDD RAID 6 (Data) | 1 x Blu-ray
NAS: TVS-h674 | F/W: 5.0.1.2376 | 16GB | 3 x 18TB RAID 5
Apps: DNSMasq, PLEX, iDrive, QVPN, QLMS, MP3fs, HBS3, Entware, DLstation, VS, +

From what I can tell, RAID-50 is more a function of QTS 4.3.4 (currently in beta) than the model. Minimum requirement would be a 6 drive unit, and you would essentially get 4-drives worth of capacity. There are some trade-off's with going with a 6-drive RAID 50 config vs. a 6-Drive RAID-6 config in terms of performance and other options (some functions are not supported in RAID-50).

As for supporting the same 10G cards, you would want to check each model's compatibility list at http://QNAP.com

My GUESS would be that the 673 & 671 likely do, not sure about the 653 and 663.

I asked here because I don't know if RAID 50 depends on the type of hardware or the system itself. The specification does not provide support but I have seen that there is a new QTS 4.3.4 that supports RAID 50.
The question is whether this version is available for the above devices and whether it's all that is needed for this RAID 50 support to work.

Before everyone rushes out to put RAID 50 on 6 bay+ units and find negligible improvement in performance, is Qnap going to post some RAID 50/60 comparison stats to RAID 5/6?

They have posted a comparison “table” in here: http://files.qnap.com/news/pressresourc ... 171012.pdf

It won’t be what you are looking for. I think once QTS 4.3.4 is out of beta, then you may see a slightly more detailed version, but probably not much.

I am pretty sure 4.3.4 beta is available for all the devices you listed.

The “My Guess” comment was in relation to the 10Gb cards.

Thanks for that.
It's good they mention that RAID 50/60 like RAID 10 mainly improves random writes. Lot of people think sequential is improved!!!

No Problem. I reached out to QNAP as well to see if I can get more perf related data as well as clarification re: limitations/etc. for Raid-50/60.
