QNAP RAM Recommendations

Post by flagator »

Regarding RAM, the QNAP Turbo NAS Hardware User Manual makes the following statements:
"When installing more than one memory module, it is recommended to use the same size and ideally the same type/model in every slot"
"Use of non-QNAP RAM modules may cause system instability"

Should these QNAP recommendations be followed verbatim?

To improve VM performance, I'm going to increase system memory by adding 16GB modules in Slots 1 and 3 to add to the factory 4GB modules already installed in Slots 2 and 4 (see screenshot taken directly from my QTS). The new RAM has the same basic specs as the factory installed RAM (CT16G4SFD821 Crucial Technology 16GB 260-Pin SO-DIMM DDR4 (PC4-17000) Server Memory Module, CL=15, Unbuffered, 2133 MT/S Speed, Non-ECC, 1.2V, 2 Dual Rank, x8 Based, 2048Meg x 64)

Is mixing 16GB Crucial modules with 4GB QNAP modules a bad idea? Would the system perform better with only 16GB modules installed instead of all 40GB installed?

I'm hoping to avoid damaging any components or inadvertently hurting system performance so I'd really appreciate the benefit of your experiences. Thanks.

Bet this is related more to NAS hardware permitting to operate on single and dual (SO-)DIMMs - here the same capacity must (and type should) be installed, otherwise, the NAS won't boot. In this case, the same requirement is applicable for the marked slot pairs.

QNAP does neither support nor endorse using 3rd party memory. That's all.

Flagator - I, and others, have had good results with these DIMMs on the x73. Kingston Technology HyperX Impact 16GB RAM DDR4 2133 HX421S13IBK2/16

They worked fine with the system memory. Amazon doesn't have the kits in stock right now, but should work from any reseller. Don't worry about DDR4 2400 as when you use the 4 DIMMs, the system won't run at that speed anyway.

The factory DIMMs are 2133 btw.

Try to avoid mixing RAM sticks from different manufacturers.
Always keep your original Qnap RAM to reinstall if you need support.

I bet you're right. I just went back and read some of the older RAM upgrade instructions and this same verbiage was used but none of the QNAP units had more than two DIMM slots. QNAP needs to reword / update their RAM recommendations to prevent any confusion.

I already ordered the Crucial RAM. It has the same specs, it's less expensive, readily available, and based on reviews it works perfectly. We'll see soon.

I run 2 x 16 and 2 x 4 in my TVS-882BR with no issues.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Things aren't going as hoped.

I installed the new 16GB DIMMs in Slots 1 and 3 and the system won't boot. Won't progress past the memory check in bios. Don't know why it didn't work.

Next I swapped the DIMMs so that the 4GB DIMMs are in Slots 1 and 3 and the 16GB DIMMS in Slots 2 and 4. Same results. The NAS won't boot. Don't know why.

Next I pulled the 16GB DIMMs and put the 4GB DIMMs back to where they were originally (Slots 2 and 4) and the system boots fine. That's a relief!

Next I pulled the 4GB DIMMs and put the 16GB DIMMs in Slots 2 and 4 and the system boots fine and all 32GB are shown in Total memory.

So, the good news is I haven't trashed the machine and the 16GB DIMMs work. The bad news is I don't have use of the two 4GB DIMMs that came with the NAS (yet).

The hardware manual leads me to believe I could put one pair in Slots 1 and 2 and the other pair in Slots 3 and 4. Then again the first couple iterations above should have worked too as far as I can tell. The NAS itself indicates I could put the 4GB modules in Slots 1 and 3 and it should work (screenshot attached) but I already tried that and it didn't work.

I'd really like to get use of all 40GB but I'm not sure what to do next (if anything). Should I continue this exercise or just be happy with the 32GB and call it a day? Thanks.

I ran mine with the factory DIMMs for a while. If I had to guess, it might be due to the crucial DIMMS running at a somewhat slow CAS 16(vs 13 on my Kingston)

Do you happen to know what the factory DIMM CAS value is? QNAP doesn't show it in the replacement products section.

And thank you Trexx for the insights. Prompted by your post, I did a little more research on the CAS or CL parameter and suspect that may indeed be the issue. It's annoying that QNAP apparently doesn't publish that spec on their RAM. Being made by Kingston though it's reasonable to assume it has the same CL value as the aftermarket Kingston RAM. Lesson learned.

@Trex saw your signature you are using a different type of RAM 'Kingston HyperX Fury 32GB Kit DDR4-2666' - yet the standard with my TS877 1600 - is 2x 4GB 2400Mhz

That being said, what's the difference between the following?
https://www.kingston.com/us/memory/sear ... C15FB%2F16
FURY Memory Black - 16GB Module - DDR4 2400MHz CL15 DIMM Part Number: HX424C15FB/16
Specs: DDR4 , 2400MHz , CL15 , 1.2V , Unbuffered ,Timings: 2400MHz, 15-15-15, 1.2V

https://www.kingston.com/us/memory/sear ... %20Servers
16GB Module - DDR4 2400MHz. Part Number: KVR24N17D8/16
Specs: DDR4 , 2400MHz , Non-ECC , CL17 , 1.2V , Unbuffered , DIMM

The latter is the recommendation from Kingston based on a QNAP server search TS877.
The only difference i see is the latency CL15 vs CL17 - the question is it safer to use the Value RAM or FURYX?

I just happened to get a good deal at the time on the 2666 so went with it. I wouldn't go "cheap" in terms of memory with the Ryzen boards. They push performance. I would definitely recommend getting the memory from someplace that you can return it easily if it doesn't work whichever RAM you get.

Hoping to use the stock with kingston value.
It’s the same MHz ie. 2400... however even a previous thread said only 3 sticks work on Kingston value ram.

Or would mixing 2400 stock and 2666Mhz still work? Has this been done before that you’ve seen?

Don’t really understand why QNAP Seems to be so finicky from other threads here. Even with people removing the stock RAM.

Am hoping to get 40GB rather than just 32Gb ram. QNAP advises against it :).
