How long is your Boot time?

Post by spikemixture »

How long does it take your NAS to boot?

I have a TVS-1282 32gb with 8x 8TB drives 4x SSD and 4x M,2 SSD
A few VM's (1 running 24/7), Plex plus several other apps.

It take around 10 minutes to be seen by Qfinder then another 5-10 mins to load the programs.

Reboot add another 5 minutes at least while apps close..

Just moved my power source so shutdown NAS
On booting was stuck on Bios Memory checking for 20+ mins and had to physically shutdown and start again
So that was a 45 minute boot !
Qnap TS-1277 1700 (48gb RAM) 8x10TB WD White,- Raid5, 2x M.2 Crucial 1TB (Raid 1 VM),
2x SSD 860 EVO 500gb (Raid1 QTS), 2x SSD 860 EVO 250GB (Cache), 2x M.2 PCIe 970 500gb NVME (Raid1 Plex and Emby server)
GTX 1050 TI
Qnap TVS-1282 i7 (32GB RAM) 6x8TB WD White - JBOD, 2x M.2 Crucial 500gb (Raid1 VM),
2x SSD EVO 500gb (Raid1 QTS), 2x SSD EVO 250gb (Raid1 Cache), 2x M.2 PCIe Intel 512GB NVME (Raid1-Servers)
Synology -1817+ - DOA
Drobo 5n - 5x4TB Seagate, - Drobo Raid = 15TB
ProBox 8 Bay USB3 - 49TB mixed drives - JBOD
All software is updated asap.
I give my opinion from my experience i.e. I have (or had) that piece of equipment/software and used it!

TVS1282T3 with TX800P:

the stuck on Bios thing has hit me in the past a few times, if it doesn't pass this test for more than 30 secs it's hard reboot time!

Normal boot (until the blue light stops blinking) takes 5-10mins I guess, never timed it but it is rather long.

How long is your Boot time? - DON't OPEN if you can't answer

Why have 80 people looked at this post and 1 replied?

How long does it take to reply with a number - 2 minutes, 5 minutes etc etc.

Less than it takes to open and read this post I bet..

Valid point but how will anyone know if it is the model and apps or the OS taking so long if no one answers!

And have you guys opened help desk tickets to see if it would a a bios issue needing fixed, qts issue, etc.

Posting times, me too’s without opening help desk tickets is kinda pointless since QNAP doesn’t actively monitor the forums.

I am asking because compared to a Synology NAS of similar size it takes 3-4 x as long.

If 10+ minutes is the norm then not much use opening a ticket .

Going by the very few answers it appears to be a qnap thing but 3 outta 450+ views is not much of a survey!

They are slow to boot and it seems to get worse as they get newer and newer firmware. As a comparison my old TS-439 shuts down and boots lightning fast running Debian when compared to my TVS-882 running QTS.
TS-439 Pro running Debian Stretch, TVS-882 running QTS.

I'm interested in this, so I'll post my experience. I just purchased a TS-230 with a single 3 TB Western Digital Red Plus drive. I noticed just now that the device takes a long time to become available after startup. I hear the beep pretty quickly - I'd guess at about 1 minute. But the box is not pingable on the network for at least 5 minutes. So, I took a look at QuLog Center, and here's what I see:

Code: Select all

The system was definitely not reachable 2 seconds after startup, despite the log claiming that the adapter was connected at that time. If I had to guess, I'd say I couldn't connect from my PC (on same physical switch) until after the Malware Remover was done and the disk quieted down. That's a little annoying actually that it takes this long. Perhaps I'll adjust the Malware Remover to only run once a week. I only connect to this QNAP for backups, inside my house - no connectivity from outside - and I run anti-virus on my Windows systems (and I'm old, so low risk profile.)

I previously had an old PC running Linux as homegrown NAS. I got spoiled by that being available probably 15 seconds after power on. I'd be interested to see any additional reports of availability delay after power on.
TS-230, TS-253A, both with latest stable QTS

I would say 10+ minutes is definitely the norm.
I have my main NAS (TS-h886) set up like yours I guess, running PLEX and several other apps. From triggering a reboot, stopping all apps, restart to finished reboot, so all apps started again takes around 22 minutes in my case..
My TVS-682 is quite a bit quicker, but that has mainly to do with the fact that pretty much the only app it's running is HBS3, but apart from that 8 - 10 min does not sound strange to me also.

My TVS-682 had the same problem quite some time ago, strangly enough it did not happen at every reboot.
Nowadays I believe I don't have this problem anymore, but then again, my TVS-682 is actually not running any apps anymore, so this could be what changed it..

It wasn't until 5.20 that I got the final beep, then I could load the page and log in

Thanks to the guys that answered.

It does appear to be the norm for Qnap boxes to take a long time.

Most well over 5 minutes and upto 22 minutes from a post here.

Currently my 1277 takes 15 minutes from clicking reboot to apps being usuable!
