The CPU performs very well and does not overheat and with the boosted 6 cores and hyperthread technology it's not really noticeable that it can't use the CPU turbo past its 2.4Ghz base clock speed.
Hi pbatey7!

Do I understand this correctly: QNAP TVS-x72XT NAS models are NOT able to use turbo clock speeds past the max. base clock??
If this is correct, I think I'm better off with a fast i3 CPU than an i5 or i7, or not?

Best bet is to open a helpdesk ticket with Qnap to get an official answer.

If it is so, why TVS-872XT uses i5-8400T 6-core 1.7 GHz Processor?
872XT with i5-8400T at lower base clock supposed to use better CPU than 672XT with i3-8100T 3.1GHz.

TVS-472XT Pentium G5400T 2-core 3.1 GHz Processor
TVS-672XT Core i3-8100T 4-core 3.1 GHz Processor
TVS-872XT Core i5-8400T 6-core 1.7 GHz Processor, Max turbo to 3.3 GHz

Please refer Single Thread CPU benchmark.
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

Intel Core i7-8700T @ 2.40GHz 2,351 (x12 Thread)
Intel Core i5-8400T @ 1.70GHz 1,926 (x6 Thread)
Intel Core i3-8100T @ 3.10GHz 1,826 (x4 Thread)
Intel Pentium Gold G5400T @ 3.10GHz 1,871 (x4 Thread)

hmm.. maybe, G5400T is better than i3-8100T??

I've done a bit of testing with my 8700T (i know little to nothing about Linux but had a quick google about how to find out the current cpu speed - so if this isnt the right way to do this, please do tell me and i'll run something different)

as far as i can tell, it can turbo:

[~] # cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "MHz"
cpu MHz : 3800.000
cpu MHz : 3800.003
cpu MHz : 3800.007
cpu MHz : 3800.028
cpu MHz : 3800.005
cpu MHz : 3800.000
cpu MHz : 3799.982
cpu MHz : 3800.007
cpu MHz : 3800.003
cpu MHz : 3800.003
cpu MHz : 3800.016
cpu MHz : 3800.002

but when its under heavy load (all cores 100% - an artificial test) it throttles pretty quickly :

[~] # cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "MHz"
cpu MHz : 2100.652
cpu MHz : 2100.532
cpu MHz : 2100.501
cpu MHz : 2100.455
cpu MHz : 2100.410
cpu MHz : 2100.361
cpu MHz : 2100.299
cpu MHz : 2100.323
cpu MHz : 2100.224
cpu MHz : 2100.164
cpu MHz : 2100.120
cpu MHz : 2100.075

(and it is still only reporting 54C so i think its trying to stay within the power envelope rather than thermal throttling)

my VMs certainly feel snappier but that could just be due to all of the extra threads

Thanks a lot, this is very helpful!

I consider myself an advanced Linux user... as far as I can tell, this is one of the best ways to determine clu speeds on QNAP boxes :-)

Can anyone confirm if the TVS-472xt CPU can be upgraded to the new i9-9900T which has the same 35W TDP? What's the chipset of the motherboard of TVS-472xt?

i would not have expect it to - even if it has the right chipset the BIOS would also have to recognize the chip, so they would probably have to update the BIOS , and unless they are going to sell a model that has a 9th gen processor then they probably wouldnt bother with a bios update, so you may be out of luck.

of course i may be wrong - we will have to wait for someone to try it

Nope your out of luck.... Only if Qnap has that model with a 9th gen processor … no special BIOS updates even if it would be possible..
I would think it would be a selling point if they (Qnap) would be willing to do that but they will not.. Unless you have the ability to add the CPU micro code yourself … it will not happen.
Same with the Ryzen 2nd Gen...unless they sell that model with that CPU ,they will not do a updated BIOS so you can use it on a current model that it would work on...

Mmmm i have the i5-8600T
When idle, it's doing around 900Mhz
/$ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "MHz"
cpu MHz : 900.075
cpu MHz : 900.273
cpu MHz : 900.137
cpu MHz : 900.035
cpu MHz : 900.099
cpu MHz : 900.106

under some load ... (Sabnzbd, zip)
/$ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "MHz"
cpu MHz : 3099.993
cpu MHz : 3100.913
cpu MHz : 3100.622
cpu MHz : 3100.073
cpu MHz : 3100.243
cpu MHz : 3100.032

3100 Seems to be somewhere a limit and it never goes to the max turbo which should be 3700 Mhz....
Any idea?
In the Bios there's not much to see or to enable.....
