QNAP TS-670 QM2-2P-344 PCIe 3.0 x4 & x8 success!

Post by chodaboy19 »

Full system config:
TS-670
Intel i7-3770S
16GB RAM
5 x 8.0TB WD Red (WD80EFZX)
1 x 8.0TB WD Red (WD80EFAX)
QM2-2P-384
2 x ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1.0TB

After a lot of research I bought the PCIe 3.0 based QM2-2P-344 to use on my TS-670.

Since I have an i7-3770S and this processor supports PCIe 3.0, it should theoretically work with a QM2 PCIe 3.0 card since the PCIe slot is wired directly to the CPU. Later, I was able to find the motherboard block diagram and was able to confirm that the PCIe slot is indeed wired for x8 lanes directly to the CPU.
(QNAP compatibility shows only PCIe 2.0 cards because the original CPU that shipped with the TS-670 was limited to PCIe 2.0)

I am testing to see if using the SSDs in a RAID 1 cache makes some difference.

It looks like I can actually use a PCIe 3.0 x8 lane card, so I will be switching to the QM2-2P-384 next week:

After installing the PCIe 3.0 x4 card with 2 x ADATA 8200 Pro 1.0TB SSDs, I ran some quick tests and it seems to be working without issues:

So for those with TS-x70 series and a CPU that supports PCIe 3.0 you have a great opportunity extend the life of your NAS while taking advantage of the newest NVMe technology via the PCIe bus~!

Thank you for taking the risk to try this out and then posting to confirm this chodaboy19. It's much appreciated here.

I have a TVS-671 with a i7-4770S and have spent a long time looking for confirmation that the QM2-2P 3x PCIe cards would work in my NAS. Whilst your model is slightly different I understand that the motherboards are pretty similar and so I would anticipate similar compatibility.

I currently have two generic NVMe adaptors with two 512GB Toshiba NVMe drives in the PCIe slots, however I've been unable to set them up as I want (storage pool and possibly Qtier) since Qnap removed this functionality for non QM2 cards with firmware update to 4.3.4. Frustrating to be forced toward the QM2 card but at least it is good to know that the QM2-2P-384 should work.

How do know the card is running at PCIe 3 speed?
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

The QM2-2P-384 and some other PCIe gen 3 cards have now shown up on the compatibility list for the TVS-671 and so I assume they will work at PCIe 3 speed on that model at least.
