How do you use a Graphics Card?

Post by spikemixture »

Do you use your added graphics card for Virtualization and then what?
Or video transcoding, coding/remuxing/converting, HD Station?

I have just put an AMD graphics card in my TVS-1282.

I do some re-coding/converting of media in a win10 VM and was hoping the card would take some of the load off the CPU.

I have read the instructions and Qnap sees the Card and Virtualization Station sees it.

But Once I add the card via the PCIe option I get a VNC Authentication box pop up can go no futher as I have not set VNC password.

The instructions show the setting up of VNC screen as a process once in win10 after being instructed to add the card!
Have reversed the process and adding VNC and creating a password - then the card but after signing in I get black screen only.

334 views and apparently not one has a graphics card!

Possible but unlikely.

I wonder the record for views with no answers?

I’d like to know about this as well. It doesn’t seem like QNAP wants anyone to know how to use non QNAP hardware. I’m struggling with adding wireless and struggling with what video card I can insert or even if my unit is compatible. I have a QNAP 1635 which is NOT x86 based.

I’m following this and I hope someone tells you what you need to know

Plug in card to NAS
Hookup monitor via HDMI to card
Hookup keyboard/mouse to NAS via USB
Assign card to VM
Assign usb keyboard/mouse to VM
Install windows 10 (using keyboard/monitor)
Install AMD Drivers into Windows
Done
Use RDP client to remotely connect if needed once done.

possible uses

- VM (thx to VM passthrough making this possible in the recent years. I forget starting from which QTS exactly). Then you can use the QNAP as if it were a desktop pc essentially.
- transcoding graphics card hw acceleration (for native videostation app yes it worked. but it was only recently with QTS 4.4.1 where they updated the nvidia drivers did it become supported for Plex and emby. I don't have premium accounts for either so i could not confirm this myself. but according to their devs and other users, it works kinda atm)
- Qumagie makes use of graphics for accelerating it's image processing for facial/object tagging.

in the QTS hardware settings there are 3 modes for graphics card
- Virtualstation (VM)
- QTS (this is for qumagie, videostation, plex/emby )
- container station

*notes: whenever changing to a different mode and applying, you are required to restart the NAS for it to become effective with the new setting

I have only Virtualization as an option.

I would really like the QTS option

huh? thats weird. there should be 3 modes you can select from. only 1 of them can be active. unfortunately you can't use all 3 same time... must pick one then reboot to apply the new setting.

what qts version are you using? :'

How do you use a Graphics Card?

Post by Trexx »

AMD cards are not supported for Qts mode to start with and I don’t believe even Nvidia cards are supported in qts mode IF the NAS has embedded GPU which the x82 family does.

Also I believe container station pass through only supports Nvidia cards as well.

Ok I am beginning to understand why this topic has had so few replies.
So no card can do what Qnap suggest here ?

NVidia cards work just fine for that on supported model NAS with NO embedded GPU (like my TS-877, TS-1685, etc.).
