Ts-251 Usb Ports Issue

Post by jfk105 »

Hello, on one of my nas (a Ts-251) I've installed an external storage WD to make a local backup to usb drive.
The Usb Drive was attached on one of the rear ports and formatted EXT4 to keep backup versioning.
After some time (about a year) the backup app reports that can't do the job bacause no pair folders... so I checked and I see that no external storage was detected.
After some plug/unplug and restart the nas it worked again. But after some days the problem was back.
So I did some test to solve: 1) Change the usb port 2) Reformatting the Usb 3) Upgrade Backup Sw to Hybrid Backup. Nothing. It works but onlt for a random time.
So the next step was to change the usb drive (now it's a Toshiba) and it worked well for some months (until last week pretty much).
Now after the same tests tried above I've upgraded the nas firmware to latest (4.4.1) and after the reboot (with usb drive plugged) no luck. The usb drive wasn't detected.
After an "unplug/plug" the drive is come back alive and backup is working but I'm thinking that in a few days the problem will recur.
Any ideas? Has anyone had the same problem as me?
Thanks in advance
J

I would suspect the cable.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

@P3R
But when was happened the first time (about one year ago) after many tests I changed the usb drive with a new one (and its cable was a new one) and the issue has recurred (after a while not immediately).
Btw I try to ask if they have a second cable to check...
thanks

I've tried with a diffrent usb cable on different port: drive not detected. So I guess there's a problem with usb ports (sometimes works after a turn off / turn on but I can't consider it a solution)

If u install Putty and login, try running "lsusb" command to see what this is saying.
