Performance Issues TS-453A FW 4.4.1.1101

Post by gepposmart »

Hi All,
after upgrading my TS-453A from 4.3.6.0923 to 4.4.1.1101, I register a significant decrease in write performance, from about 850Mbps to 600Mbps. Read performance are unaffected (about 900Mbps). Absolute values are not strictly relevants, considering they could change using different testing utility, what is important is the performance drop using the same test software (Lan Speed Test 1.3.2).
Please note that now I get better performance (730/900Mbps) using an old TS-569Pro (FW 4.3.4.1082) connected on the same gigabit switch using the same test PC running Windows 7 x64.
Does anyone has registered a similar issue? Any hints?

Then, I suppose the only chance is opening a support ticket with very few chances to get a fix....
Unfortunately is not the first time I got a performance issue due to a firmware upgrade but I did not find a big interest for this argument in the community.

Thank you a lot, anyway.

Well the chances are much, much, much better that Qnap support will eventually fix a performance issue in QTS than that someone in this community will.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

Unfortunately this is not my experience.
Contacting QNAP support team brought to a lot of wasted time with negleible result. Moreover they usually want to remotely access to your network (which is a no-no from my point of view), they don't tell you what they are doing and finally I had to find a workaround by myself.
I doubt they could compile a new firmware to fix the issue, I think to have more chances to find a fix, working on the network adapter settings of the PC as well as on the configuration file of the QNAP (or as last resort, downgrading to previous firmware version).
That's why I opened this thread.

Did you happen to open a ticket?
I couldn't figure why out of the sudden my 453A also started to have slower write performance but now I know that I'm not alone.

I saw this after I noticed a huge slow down of my QNAP TVS-873, while looking around at system fully I found that the system was a 16GB RAM unit. But after looking deeper found it was only seeing 7GB RAM. It passed the Power on Memory Checking. Also when viewing the System hardware it reported 16GB RAM and 2 8GB RAM in slots 1 and 3. Yet when I went into the Telnet port and asked it to report ram only one memory module was reported?? on checking what QNAP reported and what the Linux reported found that one Memory module could be faulty.

The more interesting point is that the Power on Boot Passed on every start and the QNAP System show 16GB. so Be aware and check your memory is really all there.

Hello, good news.....
It sounds as they fixed the issue in release 4.4.1.1146 although there isn't any reference in the release notes.
Can you please test the new release and confirm it is fixed?

I forgot to say I already tested it and now the TS-453A shows about 780Mbps write / 900Mbps read. So, it is slightly slower than firmware 3.x, but anyway it is acceptable.
