QNAP TVS-x72N Memory upgrade

Post by mjpmotw »

I have a QNAP TVS-672N and already bought some Kingston Module to get from 4GB to 16GB (2x8). I opened the case but got frustrated as I didn't see how to install the memory.
The backplane has a big cooling sink for the CPU, I removed it but there was no S0-Dimm. I already installed M.2 Modules on the other side of the mainboard, so I realized that the memory slots must be pinned under the drive cage :-0

Anybody already did that upgrade and has some tipps on how or what to remove first?

No. That's why I am posting the question "how to install". I ordered 2 x Kingston ValueRAM (1x, 8GB, DDR4-2666, SO-DIMM 260 pin) - KVR26S19S8/8

This document describes ValueRAM's KVR26S19S8/8
is a 1G x 64-bit (8GB) DDR4-2666 CL19 SDRAM (Synchronous
DRAM), 1Rx8, non-ECC, memory module, based on eight 1G x
8-bit FBGA components. The SPD is programmed to JEDEC
standard latency DDR4-2666 timing of 19-19-19 at 1.2V. This
260-pin DIMM uses gold contact fingers

I thought the dimm slot was on the inside drive tray on the right side if your were looking at the nas.

I've just bought my 672 and comes tomorrow with 4gb and want to upgrade this to either 8 or 16.
Is the Kingston proved to work in the 672n?

You could just try looking in the manual.
Also I would be cautious about going with any brands “value ram” for a NAS. We tend to see more problems with that You spent a fair amount on the NAS, don’t skimp on the memory.

Hi Paul, you made my day - User Manual. Never thought of that. In English for my non-italian speaking fellows https://eu1.qnap.com/Storage/TechnicalD ... -01-en.pdf Page 28/29.
Wish me luck in "Estrarre il vassoio"

I am aware of the RAM issue, it's just sometimes that we can't get the RAM that I want here in Switzerland. On the Crucial site I only find the TVS-872XU-RP-I3-4G which might have the same specs/board.

Basically you don't even need top unscrew the NAS lid - simply remove 2-3 disks from right and you can see the memory modules stacked. I had 2x2GB on my that I replaced with 2x8 GB (Kingston KVR26S19S8/8) - it booted. We will see how stable it is.

Not sure how I got the Italian link, but glad it helped. I have had good results with Kingston’s HyperX line of memory for my QNAPs and generally easy to find on amazon.

I recently installed ONE of these in my 672N and works great (I only use 1 of the slots currently).

I think sometimes the marketing stuff from QNAP and Synology is taken a little too serious. Neither QNAP nor Synology have their own RAM production, QNAP is also using Kingston modules. The really important thing is that the specs of the RAM bars used matches the NAS - that's all. Admitting that such specs are sometimes a little hard to read for non-technicians. Have upgraded my original QNAP 8 GB (2x4 GB Kingston) to 32GB (2x Crucial CT16G4SFD8266 DDR4-2666 SODIMM 16 GB) and it works perfectly. Price was 98 Aussie $ per piece (= ca. 60 EUR) on 26/01/2019 :-)

FYI just upgraded my TVS-872N with an Intel I7 9700 and two sticks of Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 3200 MT/S (PC4-25600) CL22 DR X8 Unbuffered SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFD832A.
The memory obviously runs at 2666Mhz, I ran 10 passes of Memtest+ and am now running a couple of VM's and the system is rock solid, the CPU sits at around 70% and 58C.

I did order the TVS-672N last week and also plan to upgrade the memory to 32GByte.
When looking on the product page at: https://www.qnap.com.cn/nl-nl/product/tvs-672n i see under Optionele accessoires a tap RAM.
The largest capacity ram sticks they sell is 16 GByte. The EAN code for this stick is 4713213514900.
When searching on youtube for this code i see that this memory has only 2x8GByte.
The TVS672N supports 32GByte of memory.
How can you get 32GByte when QNAP only has 16GByte sticks?

Where can i find the official link for the 32GByte sticks for the TVS-672N?

Where can i find a manual for a cpu-upgrade?

Thank you

Is the 9th gen i7 9700 cpu working without problems? I would like to upgrade mine with an i7 9700T...

My 9700 is working fine but no iGPU (no transcoding and HD Station)until QTS gets to version 5.0 it seems.
