TS-x73 (TS-673) does ECC work

Post by LeonBong »

I own a TS-673 this has an AMD RX-421ND CPU.
According to AMD this CPU supports ECC-ram.
https://www.amd.com/en/products/embedded-r-series-soc

Currently is have 20GB (2x2GB + 2x8GB) of RAM.
I want to replace this 2x16GB ECC to prepare myself for QuTS Hero where ECC is a great benefit.
Will ECC ram work, i understand that it is not supported, but will it work with ECC functionality?

you would have to try

also, I wouldn't hold my breath regarding hero..unknown yet if qnap will even release a version for low end x86 cpu's (like celeron and amd embedded options)

As far as I am aware, there is no support for ECC memory in the x73 family.

here is some info from QNAP (via reddit)
Reddit - QuTS Hero - Zfs based file system.png
so 1-5GB of RAM for EACH TB of deduplicated storage .. that is a LOT of RAM.... so no point to bother upgrading any Home or SMB NAS unless the plan is to store very little data on it

Qnap
Says on this website https://www.qnap.com/quts-hero/en-us/
Quote:
Notes:
QuTS hero requires a NAS with at least 4GB memory.
Inline Data Deduplication requires a NAS with at least 8GB memory (at least 32GB memory is recommended for optimal performance).
QuTS hero is not supported by dual-controller NAS systems.
As QTS and QuTS hero use different file systems, the NAS system must be re-initialized before switching between QTS and QuTS hero. Users must back up their data and system settings beforehand.

And deduplication is not important for me.

I'am aware that ECC is not suported that doesn't mean that ik can't work.
The memory controller is in the CPU and this CPU can do ECC according to AMD.
Qnap already sells NAS-devices with QuTS Hero with only 32GB of RAM the TS-673 can support 64GB of ram currently, nobody has tested the bigger modules from 32GB each yet.
If those 32GB module work this can hold 128GB of RAM that is on par with there current QuTS Hero devices.

You don't need a fast CPU for ZFS you need RAM and if you can ECC.

I was hopping someone already has tried this.
Besides one person on reddit or that Qnap say's that i could work. (I know they can't support this officially)

QNAP does NOT list ECC memory support for this model (they will list it if they do) in the model specification.

So while sometimes things might WORK, it doesn't mean they will be supported by QNAP.

Example, many users will expand the x53a series to 16GB, even though QNAP only lists 8GB as the max. Now for some users it may work fine, but if users are getting say a kernel pagefault error, QNAP support will say revert to stock QNAP memory before they will troubleshoot.

As dolbyman suggested, buy from a vendor that supports easy returns if it doesn't work.

Then think about try to swap slots. BOOM! Stupid me installed on slot 2,4. Won't work if 1 and 3 are empty.

And does boot up with ECC memory in slot 1 and 3.
And does show in the software that their is ECC ram available?

What I want to try is install 4x32GB RAM ECC/NON-ECC. If any one did it please share.
