I tried with a 16GB 2400, but the TS-253D didn't start, I have been told that the stock RAM is 2666...

For interest, I agree with a memory/ram upgrade. It is possible.
I purchased a TS-253D Nas, installed with 2 x 4GB ram, total 8GB, however it just was not enough for Plex streaming & VM application needs.
So I decided to purchase more memory/ram, and the result was good. I purchase 2 x Crucial CT8G4SFS8266 8GB 2666MHz DDR4 SODIMM, and the result was perfect.

TS-453D Memory upgrade

Post by nasinterested »

i have 32gb Crucial (Kit 2x 16gb 2400) and it works even though it is exceeding specifications. There is a rather prominent NAS channel on youtube where i got this info.

However, RAM is not the problem on x53D. CPU is just too weak. So you will only jump from one bottleneck to the next.

Hi

Getting my TS-453D next week. looking to upgrade the RAM, probably to 2x 8gb. Possibly 2x CT8G4SFS8266 or one CT16G4SFRA266. However, I'm not very tech-savvy and I see reference to single rank and dual rank. Do I need to choose one kind of rank over the other or does it not matter?

TIA

Is it possible to use 3200 RAM? I haven't found the 2666 available to me at the moment but Amazon has what it calls Crucial RAM 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL22 (or 2933MHz or 2666MHz) Laptop Memory CT2K8G4SFRA32A. As is says 'or 2666', does that mean faster RAM can be used in a 453D, even if it will only work at the slower speed?

I purchased a Kingston KVR26S19S6/8 8GB SO-DIMM DDR4 2666MHZ module to run alongside the stock 4GB. The first thing I noticed is that it is difficult, if at all possible, to push down enough the memory module into place. Second thing, well, the system fails to boot. I get three leds as steady green on, the system and the first two drives. By taking a look at the manual, if I take literally the led indications, it seems that network is not working and drives three and four are not working. No audible messages or any other indication. I could remove the stock module and have the 8GB run alone, that should work but I was wondering if someone has a different idea as to what is happening. BTW, Kingston's configurator is giving me this module as compatible with ts-253D which uses the same memory as ts-453d

@ezervoud, I wrote a very detailed explanation in other forum threads/posts explaining why various Memory doesn't work, as well as what type of memory to buy. The memory you bought is an 1Rx16 (https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KVR26S19S6_8.pdf), which is not supported by the chipset. You will need to return it and buy a 1Rx8 or 2Rx8.

@njf1525 , do NOT buy the CT16G4SFRA266. I have an explanation below about "SFRA" being hit or miss, and the exact reasons for it. The long story short is that you might get an 1Rx16, at the seller's discretion. As you can see from above with @ezervoud, that won't work.

For details, refer to my post here.

Thank you so much for your response @hopeandnotexpect
It is funny because I purchased the module that Kingston proposed as compatible
I hope they will accept the exchange
I found this module instead KVR26S19S8/8 <-- I changed the originally purchased KVR26S19S6/8 to the KVR26S19S8/8 and the system boots up just fine thanks to @hopeandnotexpect
BTW, excellent analysis you wrote on the memory specs

Awesome. Great to see the success. =)

One interesting thing to note is that the RAM (KVR26S19S8/8) you exchanged to actually has "16 internal banks" per their spec but is also spec-ed as an 1Rx8 for the whole module (which only exposes 8 banks on the DDR4 interface). What that implies is that one of the signal lines internally on the DDR4 packages for bank is being used as the address line coming in from the DDR module. Kingston is listing out some details of their DDR4 SODIMM module mapping to their internal individual chips, which is great to see/understand. Thanks for commenting on the exact module model number that worked for you :)
