Expected speeds when copying from an external drive?

Post by pcapazzi »

I recently purchase a TS-431k unit and have 3 NAS Red drives (2- 10TB and 1 12 TB) I also have 1 Inland Professional SSD for cache. I am copying over files from an 8TB Easystore (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easysto ... Id=5792401). The drive is USB 3.0 and the TS-431k has 3 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 port . While copying large continuous files I seem to get an average of 60MB/s. Should it be faster?

Thanks,
Peter

Single drive for cache(r or r/w?) and then 3 spinning drives of different sizes is a bit all over the place (what volume/pools/etc are setup?)

what is the read speed of the drive when read in a different machine? (to make sure the external drivevus not the issue)

The SSD is for cache yes (r/w). I had one available so I thought I’d give it a go and turn it off later to see if there’s an impact.

I haven’t placed the NAS drives in a PC. The 10TBs were on sale so I sprung for a pair of them to get up and running. The three drives all have 256mb cache and are 5400 rpm.

r/w on a single drive is dangerous...if it goes you will have dataloss on all non destaged data

I meant to place the external drive in a pc to bench it

best setup for the ns 4 spinning drives in a raid5 with regular external backups...no cache shenanigans

Thanks for the advice. I'll flush the cache and switch to R for the time being or maybe just disable it. I look forward to getting another HDD.

However, I'm still not sure what to expect with 4 spinning disks copying from a WD USB 3.0 HDD though.

even though the nas is no powerhouse..a 4 disk raid5 (cmr drives) should satturate the copy speed of your external usb drive (around 150-200MB\s sequential)

did you test the external disks speed?

I just benchmarked it (USB Drive) and it covers that range (starts at 200 and slowly degrades to 150).

Could that be a (write-) cache problem, as discussed elsewhere?
