Is my Qnap NAS a door stopper only?

Post by Illya »

Firstly, hello to everyone. I apologise if this subject has been dealt with already.
I have an old Qnap TS-859 Pro+ which I’ve had for about 10 years.
I had always used it alongside my Popcorn Hour C-300 Media Centre. I literally used the NAS as a big single hard drive which I accessed via my Popcorn Hour.
Recently I’ve started looking at Plex, and as such I’ve set it up in my NAS.
I loaded all my media files after directing Plex to my old NAS. Everything loaded into Plex perfectly, and was/is completely accessible from the Qnap interface when putting the NAS’s IP address into my laptop.
But when I installed the Plex apps into my various devices such as on my iPhone, my Sony Bravia TV, and my Chromecast, the apps could see my NAS but had a warning ⚠️ sign beside it.
None of my apps would access my NAS, suggesting I would need a minimum firmware of 4.3.0 to make things work.
My NAS cannot load newer firmware for some reason, and definitely not 4.3.0. My NAS says it is up to date with firmware yet it is a much older version.
Does that mean my Qnap TS-859 Pro+ is now just a door stopper?
Or are there workarounds to allow me to make my Plex accessible to my peripheral devices?
Thanks everyone in advance.

If newer versions of Plex need a new FW ..you are SOL

you could install plex server on a sepperate machine (NUC,shield, etc) and keep the files on the qnap

Or go with something like kodi and use nas as nfs/cifs mount only.

Thanks for the advice. Can anyone point me to tutorials or conversations on setting up a nas with Plex set up on a designated pc please?

Yes I shall check the Plex link thanks. But I have an old Qnap and so thought this would be the first place for advice.

you could try replacing qts with something else, like what i did (but for a different model) using truenas. other options are like unraid (requires a license key purchase), or possibly other options :'
viewtopic.php?f=191&t=161170

doorstopper? i don't think so. you can replace qts for something more up to date. so it will never be a door stopper don't worry :)

but considering just how old your hardware is (i have a ts-659 pro II which is similar to your model somewhat?) i would suggest you upgrade to a new modern model. 10 years is a long time, you are due for an upgrade. something like the ts-653d series? or perhaps ts-673a ? :' there are cheaper models, but they will be less likely to handle any live transcoding if that's what you are requiring.

Plex NAS Compatibility
The spreadsheet linked above covers two different types of transcoding that the NAS device might support:

Software transcoding
Hardware-accelerated transcoding

then for plex you can use either the qpkg (i assume this is what u used for these many years), or install plex as a docker app (a bit more complicated to setup).

I also had a popcornhour (mine was a a100 which i no longer use). I replaced this for a himedia android box. there are better options these days, like the nvidia shield is a very good option for plex (but is pricey but gets the job done without fuss)

Does your NAS support DLNA? If so, you could you a streaming-capable Blu-Ray player or a Smart TV to access your files on a NAS. It is not as pretty but it works. if you got a lot of videos, you should structure your files in subfolders e.g. the main directory could be animation, documentaries, film, television shows. You can create subdirectories, under film you can have American, foreign, etc. And uder American, you can have Action, Comedy, Drama, Murder-Mystery, Romance, Sci-fi, War, Western and put for movies in said folders.

DLNA will show you a directory list and you just have to scroll through until you find the video you want. My filename structure is resolution, filename, release date and file format, e.g. 1080P War of the Worlds (1999).mkv. BTW, I do NOT recommend you use a Roku device. It is extremely slow to scan directories.

Hope this helps...

i heard roku now got into an argument with google in regards to youtube compatibility.

google says roku got made when they said they needed to add av1 support for their devices to qualify, while roku claims google is bullying them to add some more privacy invasive stuff.

so if you plan to get a roku media box, just keep that in mind and check the news how that story is developing.

personally i think av1 support is good, because it's royalty free and suppose to replace h265 as a better alternative to it.
