memory and ssd upgrade HS453DX

Post by thespacecat »

Hi there,

on some files using my smart tv the nas slows down and jump for a while. By using the pc or a mac the same files are ok.
I tried the smart control of the drives and both are ok so I dont' know what is the problem.
Do you think more ram can improve the performance, or maybe a ssd drive?

which kind of ram can I use and how many? now I have 4gb (2-2)

thank you very much

just the simple fire sharing (dlna) on a smart tv lg last generation. When a film is running sometimes it stops like the file is broken, but it is not

dlna 4k hdr atmos is working fine from my ancient 419p+ (512MB RAM) ... so if your playback stutters, make sure your network (wired/wireless) can handle it and the nas cpu is not bogged down

I think that your problem is on network bandwidth.

But if you want to upgrade your memory....
HS-453DX uses DDR4 2400 MHz CL17 SODIMM 1.2V ram modules up to 32GB (2x16GB) some single rank RAM Modules are known to not to work so double ranked ram is prefered.
Be aware that 2666 and 3200 are not supported.... you can be lucky and they can work at lower speeds... or not

These Ram modules works well

Samsung M471A2K43EB1-CTD SODIMM DDR4 1.2V 2400 Double Ranked 32GB (16GBx2)
Crucial RAM CT2K16G4SFD824A 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4 2400 MHz CL17 is a very good kit
Crucial CT2K8G4SFD824A Kit RAM 16 GB (8 GB x 2), DDR4, 2400 MT/s, PC4-19200, Dual Rank x 8, SODIMM

Althought Intel specifies in their web page that Celeron J4115 supports up to 8GB (4GBx2) and QNAP advertises HS-453DX up to 8GB too. You can check your DRAM capabilities using dmidecode tool

Code: Select all

$ dmidecode

Handle 0x0023, DMI type 16, 23 bytes
Physical Memory Array
        Location: System Board Or Motherboard
        Use: System Memory
        Error Correction Type: None
        Maximum Capacity:32 GB
        Error Information Handle: Not Provided
        Number Of Devices: 2
look at
Maximum Capacity: 32 GB

Currently i have installed Samsung M471A2K43EB1-CTD (16GBx2) Working like a charm.

Code: Select all

$ free
total used free shared buffers cached

I have a 1gb network wired..the nas is connected to my gigabit switch and so the tv...that is very very strange.
Just 2 or 3 files scrathces..the rest is ok...If I connect to my mac wireless the file is doing fine...I can't understand. I had the same problem with the old tv I had before.
I should try to change the network port on the wtich and maybe the cable...but I really don't know..

what tv is it? (many manufacturers still use 100Mbit ports), so if the file exeeds 9-10MB/s it will stutter

Switch to plex (both NAS and TV support it) and see if that makes it better, Plex is my preferred way of media playback now, much better than plain DLNA

I know it could be off topic but could you please help me to do the same thing on my 332x ( Arm cpu)
I access the console management but then how can I run dmidecode from a win 10 pc?
I see only 7 options and Q for quit.
Thanks for your answer

exit the console to regular shell or disable the console in the qts interface (for straight ssh)
