read failure in complete test

Post by kto »

I have an HS-210 with two WD60EFRX disks.
in the Disk SMART menu, "Summary" is good ("No errors were detected on disk. Your disk should be operating properly"). "SMART information" also does not show any errors.
Rapid tests are also ok, but complete test gives "read failure" for disk 1 (successful for disk 2). other than that, I haven't noticed any errors.
Is that disk failing? How can I run more detailed tests to check both drives ("smartctl -t long", or are there any better options)?

I have also installed command-line smartctl, not sure if this is correct:

Code: Select all

[~] # smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sda
smartctl 7.2 2020-12-30 r5155 [armv5tel-linux-3.4.6] (localbuild)

When it fail that test I would say yes.
How can I run more detailed tests to check both drives ("smartctl -t long", or are there any better options)?
You can get the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic software and test the disks in another computer but I don't really see the point as you already know that the disk have a problem. It's not under warranty so no need to test for that reason either. You've had almost 5.5 years out of that disk. That's not bad for a 3-year warranty disk.

Make sure that you don't get a SMR-based WD60EFAX as replacement! Get a WD Red Plus (WD60EFRX, the same you have) or other NAS or enterprise disk.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!
