Old Nas, need new PATA drive

Post by mike_bike_kite »

A drive in my qnap has failed but the other is soldiering on. I live in the UK. Any idea where I can buy pat drives? Preferably 2tb. Is there any other solution other than buying a new NAS? Ie can SATA drives be adapted?
Many thanks
Mike

Unclear what you are talking about.. the 251+ NAS from your sig uses regular SATA drives. Nothing to solder

Don't want to solder. Just want to buy PATA hard drive 2tb in the UK but can't find anything. Any options?

Still speaking in riddles, your NAS does not need PATA drives.. why do you want to solder ?

There was never any PATA drives larger than 800GB ...

Apologies. To "soldier on" is a phrase meaning to continue working despite the hardship. Please ignore.

I was too afraid to open up the qnap - I wrongly assumed it was PATA. Fantastic that it's SATA! Can I install 4tb SATA drives into my ts 209 pro or am I limited to the current 2tb drives?

Thank you for your help!

Well... until now you never disclosed what unit you are talking about .. as I said, your signature states a 251+

According to the QNAP website the device has a 2TB volume limit, so 2x2TB drives in RAID1 should work

Great!
I presume it's best to get 2 new drives? The old ones must be around 15 years old.

How do I tell which drive failed? Do I just pull it out and slot the new one in? Then wait a while before swapping the old working drive for the new drive.

This may come as no surprise but it appears I'm a total idiot :) It appears to be a QNAP 251 (my sig is correct) and the drives are 4tb. In my defence I've just come home from camping to find the NAS is failing and my internet has died. I'll just get 4TB SATA drives. Sorry for messing you around :(

I still have the questions:
  • how do I tell which drive failed?
  • can I just hot swap the bad drive with a new good drive?
  • how do I tell when it's finished it's sync?
  • Can I then hot swap the old working drive with a new drive?
  • and is it worth swapping the working drive?

- It will tell you in the gui what drive is failing (a little image of you NAS front view with the bays visible)
- yes hotswap is the correct procedure
- it will tell you in the gui when it's done
- you could swap the old working drive .. but why would you ? .. it's working

It was surprisingly easy replacing the new SATA drive, just pull out the bad drive and insert the new one then leave it to do it's thing. It took about 12 hours to sync the new drive. All works perfectly now. Thanks for your help.
