TVS-h1288X - What RAM to choose

Hi all,

I would like to run VMs on this QNap, and I know the 16GB will not be enough.
I looked at the QNap webpage. It shows some compatible RAM, but the link goes nowhere as these model may not be available at all. https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/tvs-h1288x

I can't find what the original RAM is beside I do have 2x 8GB. These are installed in the slot 2 (channel A, DIMM 2) and slot 4 (channel B, DIMM 4). SO I guess it's correct when it goes by pair.

I understand I need some ECC RAM. But can you answer some question to help me choose a suitable RAM for this NAS ?

• Do I need UDIMM or RDIMM ?

• What is the Spec : 2G X 8 ?

• Do I need a Single or Dual Channel ?

• Do I need to get a DDR4-3200 ?

• Can I add 2x16GB or 2x32GB and work perfectly next to the 2x8GB or do I have to change all 4 RAMS ?

• A-Tech or NEMIX brand ok ? (found on Amazon, QNAP seems to be super expensive and no DDR4-3200 available, if it is necessary).

I just received my 1288x last week, I've tried 16GB X 4 UDIMM ECC 2400 memory, however it got stuck on memory checking when boot up, I'm looking to purchase 32GB X 2 DDR4 ECC 3200 memory next week to try it out.

Hi all, The memory is very specific, so from what I have purchased and currently use in my 1288x is Kingston KSM32ED8/32ME 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz ECC Unbuffered Memory RAM DIMM.

Shop around as the prices vary a fair bit. Also note that if you use 2x sticks of this and the original ram together, all memory will operate at the lower Mhz. So 2666 instead of 3200. When using 4x of these, they all run at 3200. If you shop around, search on this part number: KSM32ED8/32ME it will help you find the best deals. Stock is very limited in general

Hi all,

I also found out that the memory is very specific (Speaking about my TS-h886, QuTS-hero model). At first I had tried to install non-ECC memory, without succes, so I got stuck at boot, actually also had the bus speed wrong for the first set of modules I tried.

After this I ordered 2 sticks of Samsung memory: Samsung M391A4G43MB1-CTD - DDR4 - 32 GB - DIMM 288- PIN - 2666 MHz - ECC, which worked just fine.
After this I tried to combine this memory with the original 16 GB, but after installing these, again I got stuck at boot, so a combination of both did not work for me in this case.

For example, I bought for my NAS TVS-h1288X-W1250-16G two Kingston RAM modules "KSM32ED8/16ME" (16GB 3200MHz DDR4 ECC Kingston CL22 DIMM 2Rx8 Micron E) and with original 2x 8GB RAM installed in the NAS these new Kingston ECC RAM modules works like a charm (without any problems)

I am curious to know if anyone out there has been able to run Non-ECC RAM successfully in this unit, or does it simply require ECC RAM; period? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated on this question.

The processor supports ecc or non-ecc. Most folks will recommend only running ecc if you are using the ZFS file system. ECC RAM can correct common memory errors and some posts on ZFS file systems go on about how an uncorrected memory error in the ZFS cache in memory can destroy a storage pool. Thus you want ecc RAM to prevent this.
My POV is that “if you want maximum fault tolerance, use ECC RAM”.
In my primary TVS-h1288x I run 128 GB of non-ecc RAM with ZFS file system. I have 6 VMs running and 8 containers so having the maximum amount of RAM was my need. I do run the risk that a memory error could cause a problem.
Best practice is on mission critical systems use, ECC RAM.
But from a technical standpoint the system supports non-ECC Ram.
