TL-R400S High Fan Speed after 1.2.0 Firmware Update

Post by gribnut »

I have two TL-R400S expansion units attached to my QGD-1600P.   After updating both TL-R400S units to firmware version 1.2.0 from 1.1.0, both fans on both units were running 9100 RPM (high speed) all of the time, regardless of system/disk temperature (system temp of 40 degrees C).  Fan speed switch was set to auto.  Fan speed was high (9100+ RPM) regardless of fan speed switch setting of low/med/high or auto.   Downgraded firmware back to 1.1.0 and fan speed is 1800-1900 RPM with system temp around 41 degrees centigrade. Fan speed switch also works properly w/ 1.1.0 firmware.

Release notes for 1.2.0 firmware update includes "Fixed an issue where the system fans would not spin up to cool down HDDs when they overheated.".  Appears may be a firmware bug with 1.2.0 where fans run at high speed regardless of temp. I've opened ticket w/ QNAP support but passing along in case other have same behavior w/ TL-R400S 1.2.0 firmware update.

@charlesl - curious as to what model NAS/Switch you are using.
While QNAP support is looking into it, their initial response indicated that TL-R400S was "only officially compatible with the newer QGD-1602P". I believe any QNAP device running QTS 4.4.2 or later that supports the QXP-400eS-A1164 expansion card supports the TL-R400S (regardless, all is working outside of fan speed from 1.2.0 firmware update). I also pointed out that the TL-R400S fan speed is always running at high (9k RPM) even when QGD-1600P is powered off and regardless of fan speed switch (auto/hi/med/lo). Downgrading to TL-R400S firmware to 1.1.0 fixes high fan speed (fan speed matches hw switch setting).

I have a 4 Bay Expansion TL-400s have just updated to 1.2.0 and now the audible warning is sounding the JBOD software manager states a system temperature of 224 degrees Celsius 435 degrees Fahrenheit although the device and disks are stone cold!!!!the Fan is on full speed and the regulator switch on the rear of the device has no effect!
Please fix this QNAP !!!!!

Update to my Post above; after 15 Minutes I had to switch the audible warning tone off. Then the software QNAP JBOD Manager reported normal temperature,5 Minutes after that the warning is back and the software is not reporting any temperature at all, both the enclosure and disks seems to be at normal temperatures!
My System :
Processor AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor 3.70 GHz
Installed RAM 64.0 GB
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Edition Windows 10 Pro
Version 21H2
Installed on ‎25/‎02/‎2022
OS build 19044.2251
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4180.0

Update Reinstalled Firmware 1.1.0 and all is well again

made a similar observation but for the TL-D400S

downgrade to 1.1.0 fixes the issue

in the 1.2.0 changelog they claim that update fixes some sort of fan issue. but on 1.1.0 i didn't notice that, because fan seems to work. i only backup or recover, then eject and leave off when not in use. in this type of use case, 1.1.0 seems to work fine for me.

but 1.2.0 was definitely not usable. it kept beeping every 5 minutes for no apparent reason.

Exact same issue here with TL-D400S connected to a TVS-471. Downgrade back to 1.1.0 stopped the three long beeps every 5min and the fan spinning on high constantly even though the button on the back was set to auto. In the process I discovered the audio off button on the back of the device; woulda like to have known about that while it was beeping all night and I ordered a replacement fan before I found this thread ..

in the manual it says the 2 switches at the back (there is another third switch at the very bottom is for the power on/off) that says this in the manual
• Power
Important
QNAP recommends waiting at least two seconds after powering
off the JBOD enclosure before powering it on again.
• Fan speed
• Audio alert

so i guess you can disable the audio beeping alerts by toggling the audio alert off. that said, why should you? clearly it's a bug and it's not working correctly, so why would you be risking a firmware update that clearly has issues? that's why i rolled back :'

FWIW, QNAP appears to have yanked the 1.2.0 firmware update. I no longer get prompted for new version when logging on to QTS and the QNAP download pages for TL-R400S and TL-D400S no longer have 1.2.0 version listed.
https://www.qnap.com/en-us/download?mod ... y=firmware

(my QNAP support ticket is still open/in progress)
