Re: TS-459 Pro RAM upgrade to 2GB
Would it be possible to also upgrade the CPU on the 459 Pro+?
Thanks...
Thanks...

99.99% no.
0.01% to what processor? What technology and possibilities you have available?

just thinking of upgrading it to another atom processor, a bit more powerful, that's all...

Re: TS-459 Pro RAM upgrade to 2GB
QNAP has the first 1GB RAM stick "epoxyed" into place. (They apparently don't want you replacing it).the doivler wrote:Hi there, I have a few questions pertaining to the TS-459 Pro series NAS devices. I appreciate any feedback, in advance!
I am looking at the TS-459 Pro II, and am considering buying it over the TS-459 Pro+ model because of its expandable ram. I am, however, a little perplexed as to how much ram I can throw into this thing, as most of the documentation online suggests it caps out at 3GB (DDR3 I believe, as opposed to DDR2 in previous units).
1) Is it 2GB per ram slot, or simply 1GB / 2GB (total 3GB)?
QNAP has the first 1GB RAM stick "epoxyed" into place. (They apparently don't want you replacing it).2) Am I better off buying 2 x 2GB paired sticks with really good CAS timings, or
QNAP offers replacement RAM at excessive prices:3) Better off just buying the suggested un-even 3GB capacity (unmatched CAS timings and capacity)
1GB RAM Module
RAM-1GDR3-SO-1333
US$99.00
2GB RAM Module
RAM-2GDR3-SO-1333
US$159.00
Check them out in the QNAP Accessory Store (TS-459 Pro II Section)
Your NAS is very fussy about it's RAM. Some RAM works. Some doesn't.4) Can you install ANY SODIMM ram in these devices (normal notebook ram)? Or does it have to be a rather specific type of ram that limits my purchase options?
I'm unqualified to answer this question. I own a TS-419P+ (which does not support RAM upgrades).5) Are there any other benefits to purchasing the TS-459 Pro II over the TS-459 Pro+ ? Especially now because the TS-459 Pro+ (apparently) accepts up to 2GB? (according to one of the forums I recently came across, which sparked my questions regarding 2GB ram slots in these machines)
The TS-459 Pro II Product Page clearly states "Expandable RAM, up to 3GB".the doivler wrote:All of this, because if the unit is capable of operating (and hopefully registering!) 4GB ram, I would prefer to buy matched, low latency 2GB modules (2 x 2GB) to go in it.

i have upgraded my TS-459 Pro with a "GSKILL SODIMM DDRII PC6400 2GB - CL5" (2GB X 1).
ref. "F2-6400CL5S-2GBSQ"
it works fine

Re: TS-459 Pro RAM upgrade to 2GB
I tried Kingston acr256x640s31333c9 in my TS-259 Pro and it did not work (would not boot). I bought the memory off Ebay and i assume it is good but i can't say for sure. I now ordered a 2Gb Kingston KVR1333D3S8S9 for $18 from Newegg like i should have done in the first place.

The KVR1333D3S8S9/2G memory worked in my Qnap TS-259 Pro+.
It has 4 chips on it.

Re: TS-459 Pro RAM upgrade to 2GB
Ok, some clarification here.
Due to the fact that these models use Atom processors, they can only use single sided modules. Memory modules with chips on both sides won't work.
This is an Intel limitation.

Re: TS-459 Pro RAM upgrade to 2GB
Well, i just put in a KVR1333D3S8S9/2G 2GB stick in my 869-Pro (Atom 2.13) , and it's got chips on both sides, and it works fine. I tried another DDR3-1333 stick i had leftover from a laptop upgrade, and the system did not boot, it had chips on a single side.QNAPLars wrote:Ok, some clarification here.

Maybe it has to do with the "Single Rank" vs "Dual Rank" spec on ram chips? I know that this particular kingston stick is "Single Rank", advertised as 1Rx8. When I get home I'll check if the 1GB stick i tried using unsuccessfully is marked as Dual Rank.

Sure - physical chip layout has no impact here.HiVolt wrote:Maybe it has to do with the "Single Rank" vs "Dual Rank" spec on ram chips?

Re: TS-459 Pro RAM upgrade to 2GB
Hmmm... it shouldn't be that either. The thing is that Atom CPU's are limited due to a single channel memory controller, but I don't ever remember seeing an issue with single or dual rank DIMMs. And physical DIMM layout can be a problem, less so these days, but not that long ago, certain motherboards wouldn't work with DIMMs that had chips on both sides.
Clearly it wasn't as simple as I thought, so maybe a combination of both? Single sided and dual rank works, or dual sided, single rank?
I wish I could do some testing here, but alas, I don't have access to random SO-DIMMs.

Re: TS-459 Pro RAM upgrade to 2GB
I wonder what the official QNAP 2GB module spec is, single/double sided, single/dual rank? Do you have access to that one to check it out?

Re: TS-459 Pro RAM upgrade to 2GB
Well, I just checked the Hynix 1GB DDR1333 stick that I tried is also Single rank, marked 1Rx16, it's a single sided stick (4 chips) that i pulled from an Apple laptop for an upgrade sometime ago.

Re: TS-459 Pro RAM upgrade to 2GB
The Adata sticks that ships with the NAS are double sided 1x8 modules. Apparently the only officially tested modules are from Adata and Transcend, but these are OEM modules that might not be available at retail.
I don't have access to the 2GB modules, so I'm afraid I can't check, but if I see one somewhere in the office, I'll have a look.
I'd suggest that you guys start a thread here in the forums where you compile a list of working and non working modules, as it would be a good reference for everyone here.
