iTunes 10

Post by morphean »

So far with my TS-419P, iTunes 10 does not work, I have reverted back to iTunes 9 and all works as expected. Not sure whether this is a bug with iTunes 10 or the MultiMedia Station needs an update to bring it inline with iTunes 10.

Either way it does not work so if you use the MulitMedia Station with iTunes Service. DO NOT UPGRADE to iTunes 10 until this issue is resolved..

hi

apple changed their daap protocol a bit (once again)... so we need an update on the qnap nas.

i wrote some more details about that topic at http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=144&t=34237, so let me quote myself the important part for your question:
some smart people are currently analyzing the recent changes apple made and it seems there is already a solution (http://github.com/jasonmc/forked-daapd#readme) that works again with itunes 10. so it should spread soon to other platforms and forks and hopefully qnap can integrate the necessary changes soon as well. afaik qnap's itunes solution is also - as most (all?) others - based on firefly or a fork of it.

sadly apple doesn't really care to let the world know their changes and extension of the daap protocol, it's proprietary and not open. itunes server on our nas just exists because some cool people did reverse engineer the protocol in the past.
so we need to have a little patience. as said we speak about a proprietary apple protocol, they don't tell the specs to anybody afaik. but when i look at the recent discussion in the apple forum regarding forked-daapd (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... 0&tstart=0), i have good hopes that it will work again in future on our QNAP nas too.

Still no luck with iTunes 10.0.1 and a TS-119 with firmware 3.3.3. and Windows XP.
iTunes 9 worked like a charm.

Tell us more - iTunes "server" on NAS not visible in iTunes left pane, or content won't be listed after selecting the NAS in the right iTunes panel?

After some google-fu I found that iTunes 10 breaks compatibility with the currently shipping versions of mt-daapd (FireFly) that ships with most NAS devices including our beloved QNAP products. This site has a link to the patch that fixes the issue:

http://tutorial.downloadatoz.com/how-to ... daapd.html

This is the link to the actual patch file:
http://www.informaarten.nl/mt-daapd-for ... ects=0&d=1

I spent the better part of a morning installing the necessary ipkg packages to build my own version of the mt-daapd daemon on the QNAP (TS-419P). You need quite a bit of stuff to do the build:

make
patch
the ARM toolchain (gcc and binutils)
sqlite2
libid3tag

and probably a few others I'm forgetting. You also need the source for the mt-daapd daemon. I grabbed the latest source (that happens to be around 2 years old) from the firefly site. Here's the link:
http://nightlies.fireflymediaserver.org ... 696.tar.gz

Fortunately I'm a longtime unix/linux user so it wasn't that huge an undertaking. After getting everything built and constructing a new mt-daapd.conf file (because for some reason the latest mt-daapd didn't like the QNAP supplied .conf file) I got it working.

Itunes 10.1 is able to see the server and also see all the files. If there is some burning interest in a HOWTO I'll cobble one together. Otherwise it's probably wise to just wait for QNAP to create a new firmware with a patched mt-daapd daemon.
