Open a folder for read only by anyone

Post by flycast » Tue Feb 18, 2020 1:38 am

I have a TS-869L.

I have a shared folder that I have marked as read only for the group "everyone". When I (as an admin) browse to the NAS on the network I am still presented with authentication challenge. What I am trying to achieve is to allow anybody on my internal network to be able to browse to a certain shared folder on the NAS without having them login.

How do I configure a user/group so that anonymous users can get read only access to a folder without logging in?

everyone is still authenticated users (I think)

you are looking for guest access...

dolbyman is correct - the group "everyone" is not for "guest" (non-password) users.
If you know how to ssh into your NAS, you can find the members of each group by "cat /etc/group".
You should mark your shared folder as read only for group "guest".

On my "Edit shared folder permission" I already have "Guest access right: Read only".

If I go to add a permission and select "Local Groups" there is a Everybody group but no Guest group. If I SSH and cat /etc/group the guest group is listed.

If I try to add a group called guest then I get the error "The group is already reserved by system".

When you open FileStation, select the share in the left panel then wrench icon (More Action) > Properties > Permission, is there a dropdown box near the bottom for "Guest Access Right"? That should allow you to select "Full Access"

When I did it guest access was already marked as read only. I do not want guest to have full control, only read only.

Is the shared folder under the Public folder or some other share? You may have to move it under the Public folder.
