What R/W speeds shoulds I be getting?

Post by bokr71 »

My TVS-872XT is fitted with 6 x 10TB HGST Ultrastar He10 drives, and they are configured in Raid6, with a Thick volume.

I connect to the NAS from my Mac Studio in two ways;

- Mac Studio/TB3 -> TB3/Sonnet Echo Express/Sonnet 10GbE Card/10GbE -> 10GbE/TVS-872XT
- Mac Studio/TB3 -> TB3/TVS-872XT

I mount the NAS shares on my desktop using SMB.

Using Blackmagic Disk Speed benchmarker, I get the following speeds:

- Via 10GbE - Read 1109 MB/s, Write 169 MB/s
- Via TB3 - Read 1436 MB/s, Write 166 MB/s

Is that about right?

Write seems VERY low (single disk performance?)

This is what I get on my 1288X on the HDD Pool (8x6TB WD Red in RAID6) (virtual 100GbE adapter to VM, so basically just the storage subsystem)

I am sure there is an overhead with Apple's SMB protocol, but you are right, I was wondering about the Write performance as well. I can't help to think it is also related to the testing tool as well, but don't know of a better tool to test with on macOS.

I downloaded AJA System test, and got different results:

- Via 10GbE - Read 1168 MB/s, Write 397 MB/s
- Via TB3 - Read 1827 MB/s, Write 847 MB/s

How does that compare?

Surprised that TB is so much faster, but the TB performance comes close to what you would expect from the system configuration

I changed the Ethernet interface that connects to my NAS from the one in my TB3 Sonnet Echo Express box to the internal one in the Mac Studio, and then use the one in the Echo for my LAN. That changed the numbers to:

- Via 10GbE - Read 1095 MB/s, Write 959 MB/s
- Via TB3 - Read 1839 MB/s, Write 1052 MB/s

So basically the TB3 numbers change a bit every time I run the benchmark, but the 10GbE numbers are a lot better.
