Mobile device connectivity issues
Hello
A few days ago I purchased the QNAP TS-253D NAS device and post setup I am experiencing mobile device connectivity problems. It is my first NAS device.
I am able to successfully connect to the NAS UI and SMB shared folders on my Windows 11 PC with no issues, but experience the following on mobile devices:
1). I cannot connect to the NAS UI or shared folders via my iPhone 12 Pro Max using any QNAP iOS app or safari browser. I get an error “your login credentials are incorrect or your account is no longer valid”.
2). I cannot connect to the NAS UI or shared folders via android Samsung galaxy tab using any browser or QNAP app. I get the same error “your login credentials are incorrect or your account is no longer valid”.
I am using the latest QTS firmware 5.0.0.2055 and have the latest OS on my mobile devices.
Any ideas how I can resolve this please?
Thanks

Re: Mobile device connectivity issues
Hi and welcome to the forum.
Firstly, are you connecting via WiFi to your LAN, or are you connecting via cell-tower to your router’s public IP address?

Thanks for your response
I am connecting via wifi to my LAN address. The mobile device connection also fails with WAN IP, and myqnapcloud address.

Re: Mobile device connectivity issues
The connection should never work via WAN IP, as you should never directly expose your NAS to WAN... see all the malware threads for why this is a very bad idea

Re: Mobile device connectivity issues
I agree with @dolbyman, don't use your WAN IP, or expose your NAS to the Internet via the myQNAPcloud service. Too-many NAS are hacked and ransomwared this way.
Please ensure any port-forward rules in your router pointing to the NAS are removed, and disable the UPnP services in both your NAS and router.
Back to the original issue: if you're connected via WiFi to your LAN, and have opened Safari on your iPhone, what URL are you using in Safari to connect to the NAS?

Re: Mobile device connectivity issues
Thank you, I have that done. I also scanned with advanced security policy in security counsellor and it detected no risks.
Back to the original issue:
I use the same urls that work fine from my windows PC, they are:
https://local.ip.address
https://mynasname.myqnapcloud.com
https://qlink.to/mynasname
In myqnapcloud I publish all services as private, upnp port forwarding is off, I use an SSL certificate and acl is set to private.

Re: Mobile device connectivity issues
forget that security scanner...
SSL does not protect your NAS..it's a transport encryption
make sure no ports are forwarded..(neither manual or via upnp)
if you can reach your NAS in any other way than qlink(non portforwarded bandwidth limited qnap service)..your nas is exposed and in danger!

Use this address instead: http://local.ip.address:8080eizek wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 5:52 am I use the same urls that work fine from my windows PC, they are:
https://local.ip.address
- Note that it’s plain HTTP (not HTTPS) and it includes the default web-port number for the QTS UI.

I receive the same error: “your login credentials are incorrect or your account is no longer valid”.
I have the force https always option enabled on the NAS. Could that cause this problem?

Re: Mobile device connectivity issues
I would go back to basics. Start with setting back to default port and non SSL.
Make sure that works. Then, make the other changes although they are of no value.

Re: Mobile device connectivity issues
I went back to basics by performing a factory defaults reset without deleting user data.
I followed this guide to perform a reset: https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/knowledg ... -explained
Then I followed this guide to validate my data after the reset: https://www.qnap.com/en-uk/how-to/faq/a ... t-settings
Post reset, and without making any other changes to the factory default settings, I created my own admin account again and logged in successfully with it to the NAS UI on my windows PC.
I then tested logging in from my mobile device to the NAS UI with my own admin account, and observed that the same errors persisted: "Your login credentials are incorrect, or your account is no longer valid".
Next, I tested logging in with the default admin account instead from mobile device and this worked! I had not tested previously with the default admin account as I was using my own account which has the same administrator user/group/shared folder privilege.
Is it expected behaviour that NAS login from mobile devices will only work with the default admin user?

Re: Mobile device connectivity issues
Although QNAP suggests to create a secondary admin account and disable the default one, in practice, many people find that it is embedded in the architecture and must be used for many tasks. If your NAS is properly secured (not exposed directly to the internet), I see little risk in using the default admin and I do so, as I have some tasks that require it. If you can, don't use the default admin, bit as you are finding out, not everything works. Report the issues to QNAP so hopefully they can be resolved in future updates.
