Connect 2 QNAP'S with direct 10GBE cable

Post by paulomfp94 »

Hi,
I have 2 QNAPS (TS-832PXU to TS-123PXU) in a network, connected to a switch that doesnt have 10gbe ports.
Both of the qnaps have 10gbe PCIE cards.
I would like to connect them via 10gbe so i can transfer files between them, without any switch/router.

I read in this forum that i can do that, connecting them through another network on this 10GBE ports, and then use the Browser station app to transfer the files.
The problem is the browser station app isnt compatible with this qnap models i have.
Any sugestion how i can perform this operation?
Thank´s in advance.

Browser station is not mandatory for transferring files.
Use HBS or Hybrid Mount and Filestation.

You can connect both to the qnap, but you need to set qnap to do the switching/routing and because it's in software it will have a small performance hit. So fixed ip addresses ( to avoid qnap doing the dhcp as well). Go the the advanced settings of Network & Virtual Switch. Create a virtual switch that combines the two 10gbps ports together. Set on the pc's/macs the default gateway to be the 10gbps ip of the qnap. Don't use the same subnets/ips for the 1gbps network on the qnap. So for the 10gbps network use subnet 255.255.0.0 (/16) and an ip of 192.168.3.x instead of 192.168.1.x. Make sure to enable jumbo frames (9000) on all three systems to get the performance of 10gbps.

To transfer files you'd do it from pc to pc like a normal network. Qnap will act as a router/switch only. Ofcourse you can still transfer the files from windows explorer/macos finder to the qnap and pick it up from the other computer, if you also need to store it on the NAS.

Sorry, wrong. A subnet mask 255.255.0.0 (/16) covers 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255!
Correct would be using 192.168.3.x with subnetmask 255.255.255.0 (/24) for 10g and 192.168.1.x with same subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (/24) for 1g to separate the networks.

In general: a subnet mask 255.255.255.0 covers exact one range from 192.168.x.0 to 192.168.x.255, where .0 and .255 are reserves addresses. x can be every value from 0 to 255.
