SMB Version?

Post by billy98 »

Over in this thread; I see an option to set SMB version; where is this option? I can't find it!

Control Panel -> Network Services -> Win/Mac/NFS -> Microsoft Networking tab
Click on Advanced Options, and look for Highest SMB Version.

You might find that your device doesn't go to SMB 3.0 as I believe it's a CAT 1 device, where the devices that do SMB 3.0 are the CAT 2 devices (SMB/Enterprise).

Thanks! I don't have the SMB option on that page. Time for an upgrade, perhaps.

If you're talking about a TS-X21 (as in your forum profile) that's a cat1 model and as far I know that setting is only available on cat2 models.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

QTS 4.3 will bring SMB up to the 3.0 subset available in SAMBA 4.4 to all QNAP Marvell Kirkwood NAS - the control has not made it to the UI, you need to call the readily available smb[N|NN]enable, and check the curent settings using smb2status:

[~] # smb2status

smbd (samba daemon) Version 4.4.9
smbd (samba daemon) is running.
max protocol SMB 3.0 enabled.
[~] # smb
smb21enable smb2disable smb2enable smb2status smb3enable smbtools

Enjoy!

Sorry for butting in on the old thread. I've just updated the firmware on my old (good!) TS-239 Pro II+ Turbo and found from remarks that
Fixed Issues:
- Users could not run commands to enable SMB 3 on certain NAS models after updating the version of QTS to 4.2.6.
That's true, because previously I had to connect to my NAS using the old protocol 2.1. I also found in '/etc/profile' that there is an

Code: Select all

alias smb3enable='/etc/init.d/smb2_protocol.sh enable 3'
I tried that alias and it worked! And I got:

Code: Select all

[~] # smb2status
smbd (samba daemon) Version 4.0.25
smbd (samba daemon) is running.
max protocol SMB 3 enabled.
After that I decided to get SMB3 enabled on the boot. I mounted the embedded flash with

Code: Select all

mount -t ext2 /dev/sdx6 /tmp/config
and found there smb.conf where there was a line in [global] section

Code: Select all

max protocol = SMB2_1
I've edited that line and specified "max protocol = SMB3" there.

Finally I rebooted, and voilà

Code: Select all

[~] # smb2status
smbd (samba daemon) Version 4.0.25
smbd (samba daemon) is running.
max protocol SMB 3 enabled.
Everything is working fine, and I can connect to my old (good!) NAS using the protocol SMB 3. What's more, when I looked at the smb.conf (on the embedded flash) again, I didn't find the parameter "max protocol" at all, because SMB3 is the default protocol for Samba 4.0.0 and later (I have no idea who corrected this file at the boot).

In mine it's less than 5 months since it was released (4.4.16), not "...2 years discontinued...".

So what old NAS model and QTS version do you use?
