Yep. One change is that QNAP updated the samba 3.6.x to an early SAMBA 4 build. One of the possible side effects is that some of the over-smart people which are removing the guest account or change the guest entry in smb.conf to point to whatever some Web kiddies suggested for "security". SAMBA will not start if it does not find the account to map the non-authenticated access to on the system. But as you already stated in a reply, this thread is about QTS 4.3.3 - and commonly around issues with NetBIOS host announcement and name resolution in very small networks without any other system helping with NetBIOS. All fixed on 4.3.3.0262 ff.
When reading the recent poster other thread on viewtopic.php?f=185&t=134736#p629770 we find there must be many issues, with his system, including a lost or corrupted configuration and an attempt to "fix" something by just creating new shared folders.
HI, the same problem on my TS-1679U-RP (4.3.3.0262 Build 20170727 , S/N: Q124I09237 , i3-2120 CPU @3.3GHz / 7856.8 MB RAM)
And I can't acces shared files and folders now, although before the update frm 4.2 they saw both Windows and the Dune media players .
Well, i tried "smb2status" -> " smbd (samba daemon) is not running " ..
Any ideas ?

So why don't you try turning it on?
How to do it ?
[~] # /etc/init.d/smb.sh restart
Restarting SMB services:
Shutting down SMB services: smbd smbd-notifyd cleanupd nmbd.
Shutting down winbindd services: winbindd.
locks path was set to /share/MD0_DATA/.locks
Shutting down winbindd services: winbindd.
Starting winbindd services:Starting SMB services:.
done.
[~] # smb2status
smbd (samba daemon) Version 4.4.15 # smbd (samba daemon) is not running. max protocol SMB 2.1 enabled.
[~]

Have you tried to download the firmware first and install manually? Control Panel - Firmware Update and point to the file. For some reason the live update seems to lead to the samba issues.
