Only 1 computer can access NAS at a time

Post by tornoutlaw »

Hi there, been having some problems with my NAS. At the moment, whichever computer on my network is turned on first seems to get exclusive access to the NAS via windows explorer. Any other computers that a turned on afterwards have no access and have to use the web interface.

Any idea why?

Thanks

Need more information regarding your QTS version (always include build #/date), SMB configuration on QNAP, NW configuration (routers/switches/etc.), etc.

I don't know what you mean by smb I'm afriad.

The network is a gigabit ethernet switch connected to the nas, the router and a couple of computers and game consoles. All connected devices can see the NAS as 'storage' but only one at a time can see it as a 'computer'

The NAS is on build 4.3.3.0262 20170727, I updated it this morning. The computers are Windows 10 1703

and..what happens when other computers try to access the nas?

-access denied message (if yes..where does it show up and what does it say)
-kilker clown pops up
-thermo nuclear explosion
All connected devices can see the NAS as 'storage' but only one at a time can see it as a 'computer'
no idea what that is supposed to mean...nas stands for network attached storage ...so if all computers can use it as storage ..where is the issue ?

That's the thing, only 1 computer can access the NAS via Windows explorer, i.e under the network section the NAS is visible as a computer with all the files and folders etc. All other computers can see the NAS under the 'storage' heading and when trying to access it are taken to the web interface. I've attached a screenshot, I hope that helps explain.

So that is how it displays on the computer I am using at the moment, all fine. On every other computer the NAS isn't visible under the top 'Computer' heading and can't use explorer to access it's files. Clicking it under the 'storage' heading takes you to the web interface.

only one computer at a time ? or only one computer ?

To me it is a computer setting eg a firewall , check if the computer network is set to private or public.
AND check if network discovery is switched on in network sharing .
also check if they are in the same workgroup etc.

Only one computer at a time, whichever one is turned on first gets access. I'll have a look at the mapping thing, I've never done anything like that with it.

Yes, all computers have internet access. All computers can see each other.

I looked at mapping the drive but the NAS doesn't show in the list for the affected computer to map a folder from.

just enter the IP address (or NASNAME if workgroup is configured correctly) of the NAS in the mounting dialogue

I would try switching on each computer on in turn and map the nas drives .

Do you have Windows Networking enabled in QNAP Control Panel?

Okay, so I turned each computer on at a time and was able to map a folder on each computer, and now they can access that folder simultaneously, so thank you for the suggestion dolbyman.

It still seems strange to me that the NAS doesn't show as a network location for all computers though. Maybe I am misunderstanding some functionality of it.
