Weird NFS Mount issues

Post by MeatLips » Wed Mar 20, 2019 1:14 pm

Running NFS on a TS-832x 8bay with WD Red 6T in RAID 6. I got two data volumes and share them both over 10g network to my other computer where I run a Plex server on Fedora 26 (yeah, I know it's old. I haven't gotten around to upgrading)

Since the last firmware update, my second share where all my plex files are stored will periodically lose all perms and I get something that looks like this:

Code: Select all

[myuser@slappy storage4]$ ls -l
ls: cannot access 'MOVIES2': Permission denied
ls: cannot access 'Music': Permission denied
ls: cannot access 'VirtSnapshots': Permission denied
total 8
?????????? ? ? ? ? ? MOVIES2
?????????? ? ? ? ? ? Music
drwxrwxr-x 7 myuser rmyuser 4096 Nov 14 20:44 PLEXLIBRARIES
?????????? ? ? ? ? ? VirtSnapshots
The only reason I didn't lose perms for PLEXLIBRARIES is because I was in the directory when the perms disappeared. A remount seems to solve the issue for a little while, but then it happens again. The other share doesn't have these problems at all. I'm about to throw my computer out a window.

here's my fstab entries

Code: Select all

QNAP:/Storage5	/media2/storage3	nfs	_netdev,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,intr,noatime,soft,rw,async	1 2
QNAP:/Storage6	/media2/storage4	nfs	_netdev,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,intr,noatime,soft,rw,async	1 2
To note, this permission weirdness started after I updated to v4.3.6 Build 20190308. I updated again today to v4.3.6 Build 20190316 and it ended up getting worse.

Has anyone seen this behavior before?

Wild guess, Does Fedora version support v4 NFS? Maybe drop to v2/v3 only.

Yes, had the same issue with TS-EC879U after FW upgrade to 4.3.6.0883 build 20190316, I decided to downgrade to 4.3.6.0805 build 20181228.

Fedora 26 supports nfsv4 and it's been fine mounting this. It's only after that firmware update to 20190308 and then 20190316 that this problem started. I'm downgrading as well to 20181228 to see what happens. If this issue disappears, then I'd call it a legitimate bug with the firmware.

Is it safe to downgrade without the risk of data loss?

Since I downgraded to the December build, I've had no issues.

This is clearly a bug in the firmware.

I too have rolled back to 4.3.6.0805 build 20181228 which seems ok. Both of the more recent versions I tried left my NFS access in a complete mess. I am loath to try any future updates unless I see comments in any of the threads here that indicate the problem is resolved.

EDIT: I've not seen anything in the release notes of any recent updates to indicate this has been fixed, so I'll pass on updating the TS-453A for a while.

Checking in here...

Has anyone on this thread updated to 4.3.6.0923 Build 20190425? I'm curious about it, but I don't want to update if I'm going to run into the same issues. The release notes make no mention of the issue we suffered with the file perms being lost.

I just updated to QTS 4.3.6.0993 build 20190704 and the EXACT same issue happened with the file/directory permissions. I'm about to try the 4.4.1 public beta before I downgrade yet again to 4.3.6.0805 build 20181228. I really want the security updates, but my NAS becomes un-frigging-usable when these stupid file permissions flake out.

I can't be the only a-hole running into this nonsense!

On a different note, I've since upgraded the host that mounts this to CentOS Linux release 7.6.1810 running kernel 3.10.0-957.27.2.el7.x86_64.

I just got a response on the ticket I opened:
According to the release notes the NFS issue has been resolved on the latest firmware 4.3.6.1050

Best regards,

I'm not really sure how legit this update is. This looks more like it addressed access issues, not flaky permission issues.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Yesterday, I updated to QTS 4.3.6.1050.
The backup that continued to error until yesterday ended successfully last night.
It seems to have been solved.
