On the diagram you can see my setup.
Inside the LAN I get 110 MB/s traffic from the NAS -> more is in the 1GB-Network not possible.
When I'm outside and want do download files from my NAS via VPN (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPSec) , I get the DL-rate about 350 KB/s.
Upload via VPN to the NAS works up to 200 Mb/s with WireGuard, there is no problem.
NAS-config:
- SMB 3.0 is on.
- Tried with Jumbo-Frames 1500 and 9000. With SMB-Encryption and without.
No difference.
pfSense-config:
- runs on its own hardware, CryptoDev is on.
- From the LAN I get 50 Mb/s upload to the external OpenVPN Server.
- Tried WireGuard, OpenVPN via UDP and TCP, IKEv2/IPSec, same DL-Rate of 350 KB/s.
- OpenVPN tried with different ciphers and MTU values.
Without any significant change of the SMB DL-rate.
This is not a hardware problem. I'm sure, this is not a network problem.
There is something wrong with SMB-Settings on the NAS, but don't know what.
Does anybody know, how to improve the SMB speed via VPN?
