Inconsistent transfer speeds

Post by hamja »

Hello. First of all, some info:

QNAP model: TS-412
Firmware version: 4.3.3.1624 Build 20210416
HDDs: 4x 4000GB WD Red WD40EFZX 5.400U/min 128MB 3.5" (8.9cm) SATA 6Gb/s
RAID5

Both the QNAP and my Windows 10 machine report a 1Gbps connection at the network adapter.
When transferring a large file (via SMB, FTP or rsync), I get speeds of about 20MB/s. When transferring a set of multiple smaller files via rsync (around 50mb each), the initial file in each folder is transferred at speeds between 30 and 97MB/s. After that, the speed drops to around 3-20MB/s.
CPU usage on the server is pretty high, but does not reach 100%.

Any idea what the issue could be? At that rate I would be at this for a VERY long time. :S

I got the same issue, but posted many days ago, nobody can answer my question.

I filed e-ticket with helpdesk, and will be on remote access via teamviewer next week.

the 412 is a very old and slow NAS...those speeds are probably all you gonna get from it

I just setup an old 212p and got similar speeds ~30MB/s on sequential large file writes

for a bit more you could switch to raid10 ..to spare parity calcs from that processor

You could try installing Debian on that model http://www.cyrius.com/debian/kirkwood/qnap/
