Use VPN or myQNAPcloud

Post by bokr71 »

Hi,

I need to be able to access my NAS Shares when I am out'n'about. Currently I can do that by way of creating a VPN on my iPad and then open up Qfile, and that works. I see that Qfile also sometimes connects to the NAS via myQNAPcloud, and that works as well.

Is one more secure than the other? Or, is there a third way I just haven't thought about?

Thanks!

A cloud provider with files synced to your shares?
I presume you mean MyQnapCloud Link?
Some do not trust MyQnapCloud Link but I’ve not seen evidence of breaches due to its use.
Personally a vpn server running on a Raspberry Pi works fo me.

Thx

I have just seen so many people freaking out about myQNAPcloud, but like you have never heard about any actual breaches.

For now I am just using QVPN on the NAS, with port forwards on my ISP modem/router, and have disabled myQNAPcloud Link and DDNS in QTS.

I was just hoping for a pro/con on either of the solutions; VPN or myQNAPcloud.

I suspect it is a trust issue rather than anything based on actual evidence of vulnerability. I think that’s an important difference. It doesn’t help that the company use the same branding for two different products presumably because of their original roadmap which may have seen the Link bit and the non Link bit as er well...linked!

My take...
Ease of set up and installation - MyQnapCloud wins
Ease of use - VPN wins
Sharing ability - MyQnapCloud wins
Speed - VPN wins
“Trust” - VPN wins

I am a little confused between myqnapcloudlink and myDDNS.

The former seems to be a smart url going through(?) qnap servers setting up a https connection to your NAS.

The my ddns I do not really understand? In my case this is turned on but no ports are set up and upnp disabled. If you try and type in the xxx.myqnapcloud.com address it will not get a response. Should I just disable it then? if others ‘guess’ my machine name will they be able to attack my machine from the ddns data?

But likewise, can’t people just use the smart url to attack the qts login page if they guess the smart url?

Grateful to be educated on this.

I have been reading up on myQNAPcloud, and is seems safe enough to use. Having the link is certainly not enough to access your NAS remotely, you have to get the login credentials as well, and if you have turned on 2-factor authentication, that's pretty solid. In addition you have a bunch of QNAP provided management tools for controlling that access, like location based.

The QNAP apps are all optimized for myQNAPcloud connections, and as mentioned above, with myQNAPcloud you can share remote access to family and friends. Also myQNAPcloud allows for web browser based access.

All of this is possible via VPN as well, one difference being that with VPN I haven't figured out to enable 2-factor authentication, and you still have to set up your router to allow for the port forwarding (or have your own VPN server).

Let's put things this way. Apple cloud was breached years ago, Unifi cloud was breached last year, hundreds of "highly secured" servers are breached every month (I had internet access to Prosegur interrupted for more than one month because their site was breached, and we are talking here of a company that sells security svcs), what makes you think that QNAP cloud will not be breached someday ? The appetite to breach cloud providers is much higher than just breaching one individual's VPN.

IMHO VPN is the only way to go.
QNAP TS-253A 8G QTS 5.0.1.2145
Plex Media Server 1.29.0.6209
OpenHAB 3.4.0.M2
Unifi 7.2.92

Not sure I agree when it comes to sharing files with third parties.
I would rather use a cloud provider than give access to my NAS even with a vpn.
