I have a device that can login into the NAS using SMB protcol and see the shared folder but cant format the drive.

But if I switch to use NAS protcol than the device sees the whole storage pool and can format the drive and write/read to it.

user has read/write access
Squash no root

what am i missing

SMB is for file-sharing, not formatting drives. It doesn’t have the level of access (or the capability) required for formatting. ;)
