Re: Configure DDNS and forward the service ports on NAT router

Post by jojje »

Equipment:
Router/modem (CDMA) Axesstel MV 400
Qnap TS-109 with Firmware 1.1.4 and Slimserver installed
Two computers, Win XP and Vista Ultimate
Router uses dhcp and TS-109 has a fixed ip.

I have a local network running at home and everything works just fine.

Router has ddns and I have an account with dyndns.com that I use which seems to work. My router updates external ip correctly according to dyndns.com. If I use external ip or dyndnsdomain (port 80) I see my router admninistration page. TS-109 ddns is disabled and webserver, ftp-server is enabled.
The problem seems to be that the router does not forward correctly though I have made several port forwards. When I use port 8080 I get the message "Server could not be found. I have tried at my office and I have had access to my TS-109 two times (port 8080) but they only seem to work for a short time. All of a sudden I loose connection with my Qnap. I cannot reach my Qnap with my ddnsdomain or ip. Sometimes it works fine, but most of the time I cant access my NAS.

I am stuck and I dont know what to do.

Hi I have not been able to get port forwarding to work with my QNAP, I have it working on a DLINK camera just to prove to myself that I wasnt going mad.

The Router is a Netgear and I am using a QNAP 409.

I have DDNS set up in the router and the url is http://c2c.selfip.com

Any thought on what settings I may have wrong before I kick the router !!

Thanks

I think I've got it working.

Before it was just showing my router, but I forwarded port 8080 and it now directs me to the webpage correctly.

But, do I have to forward all those ports listed in QNAPIans list?
I don't have enough space in my router to enter them all.

What ones are needed?
Can you cut corners? e.g. port forward a range such as 25-50 to get the FTP and SSH or whatever the ports are for them. (I knwo those aren't the correct ports, just using it as an example)

What if certain ports in the middle of that range are being forwarded but shouldn't? is that even possible?

Guys what about SSL, If I enable it I can get on my Nas homepage from outside.
How do I implent SSL to get this working with DDNS?

I have also the same question as the person above. I wanna acces NZBGETWEB from the DDNS service.
It uses port 6789 and I forwarded it just like I forwarded port 8080. But can't acces the QPKG program.

SSL usage is actually limited to the TS homepage, the TS administration pages, and QNAP applications, like Qmultimedia by using the click-and-play environment. Actually, we can't pipe generic Web applications like the http://[DDNS-TS]/ web pages (default on port 80), Joomla!, phpMyAdmin, or other applications like NZBgetweb here.

Not a NZBget geek - but try anyway, after browsing http://nzbget.sourceforge.net/ I'll give a try:
murda wrote:I have also the same question as the person above. I wanna acces NZBGETWEB from the DDNS service.
NZBgetweb is a PHP application, and is likely accessed using the subdirectory in the standard URL, e.g. http://[DDNS-TS]/nzbgetweb/ reflecting the path, where it is installed in Qweb.
murda wrote:It uses port 6789 and I forwarded it just like I forwarded port 8080. But can't acces the QPKG program.
Port 6789 (and I can be wrong here) is very likely the port used for RPC interconnection between the NZBgetweb application host, and the NZBget host - compare http://nzbget.sourceforge.net/rpc.html - this is not a Web UI here.

Forwarding 6789 on your router is only required when you intend to remote control your NZBget application on the TS from NZBgetweb installed on a different host in the Internet.

And I can be wrong - or my information gathered is incomplete.

Depends what you want to achieve - and which services ur really want to provide on the TS from the Internet.
BREK wrote:Can you cut corners? e.g. port forward a range such as 25-50 to get the FTP and SSH or whatever the ports are for them. (I knwo those aren't the correct ports, just using it as an example)
Combining ftp and ssh might work, beause they are in line, and no intrmediate ports. Why ever, resonable good routers have an ftp ALG (application layer gateway) taking care of the specific issues around NAT in the ftp protocol, so both active and passive transfer modes can be used. But some routers don't even differentiate between TCP and UDP services, tough - they open both TCP and UDP. Then, in case you ever install a SMTP server on the TS, and might be somewhat careless, opening 25/TCP (SMTP) as part of such a range will make your IP and TS great food for spammers.
BREK wrote:What if certain ports in the middle of that range are being forwarded but shouldn't? is that even possible?
Works, and is possible of course. Please consider using ranges with other service ports not used a bad security management approach.

Yep that is my intention. I wanna upload torrents from a different location(work or smth) towards my NZBget.
I just wanna monitor the NZBget application when i am not home.

Still unclear, sorry:

You intend to use just a browser from remote locations? -> Try http://[TS]/nzbgetweb or where ever nzbgetweb has been installed under /share/Qweb - all you ever need is http, default port 80. That should to the job IMHO.

You intend to install NZBgetweb on a different server, e.g. a hosting site or another TS, the communication is using e.g. XML-RPC? Here you need port 6789 forwarded to your NAS, and I sugest to deploy a firewall rule to control limiting the access. Complex set-up, depends if you run mutiple sites with servers - and not just remote browsers.

Yep.
If I connect true http://xxx.homedns.org:8080/ I can login into my NAS. (forwarded port 8080)
I check the QPKG directory for nzbgetweb application.
I enable this and says I can acces the link on http://xxx.homedns.org/nzbgetweb/. (no port is filled in)

If I try to connect towards the following URL's:
http://xxx.homedns.org/nzbgetweb/
http://xxx.homedns.org:8080/nzbgetweb/ (error: system message : The requested URL '/nzbgetweb/' was not found on this server.)
http://xxx.homedns.org:6789/nzbgetweb/

All of this didn't work.
Guess I am a noob but I think its a tiny setting I need to enable to get this work.

Anyone can try this out?

Corect - admin and embedded Web applications are on 8080, generic Web aplications as NZBgetweb run on the default http port, commonly 80.

Are you able to access NBZgetweb on the LAN? Don't know NBZget(web) at all - very likely there are some Web UI or text file based access control lists. This is beyond my knowledge.
murda wrote:If I try to connect towards the following URL's:

If the similar URL (with TS name o IP) works on the LAN, this is waht you should use over the Internet.
murda wrote:http://xxx.homedns.org:8080/nzbgetweb/ (error: system message : The requested URL '/nzbgetweb/' was not found on this server.)
Correct error message. Forget this URL.
As mentiond, tis is for XML-RPC for machine-to-machine communication, not for browser-to-machine communication. Close this port forwarding and forget the URL to avoid a potential security breach.

No worries, we all learn every day. Afraid, I dont have the bandwith experimenting and search the net for NZBget(web) config hints. Please give a try, and let us know here.

I still can't get DDNS to work for me... every couple of months I come back and re-read somebody's success story and try again, using the new info. and still NADA... I'm really really hoping someone can enlighten me and I can get this doggone thing to work! Especially since they came out with the new email QPKG!

Modem: Actiontec (Qwest)
Router: Linksys Wireless-G Broadband
DDNS: xxx.homedns.org

I know DDNS itself is working b/c when I try going to my homedns address I get the admin page of my router (and pinging the address does give me my external IP back)

In my modem I have configured that any request at port 8080 (from any IP) gets forwarded to port 8080 at the IP of my NAS. But when I try going to xxx.homedns.org:8080 I get a "Failed to Connect" screen. I have also tried just forwarding the request from my modem to my router (and enabled remote web admin in my router) just to see if the request was making it to my router and I still get "Failed to Connect".

What gives??? I know it's not my NAS since I can't even reach my router from the outside. And I know it's not my DDNS config since I *DO* reach my modem from the outside. The problem seems to be somewhere between my modem and my router... ???

Hello bane,
I think you should contact your modem manufacturer for how to correctly configure the port forwarding. Maybe there is a trick to make it working.

Hi,

I also have the similar problem. I use dyndns service and have configured two services from it. One is updated from my d-link router and another is updated from my ts-209 ddns service.

The result is that I can reach my box using the one updated by my router but not the one by my ts-209 ddns service. If I checked the ip address from dyndns, I found that both links were being updated periodically but their ip addresses are different! The ddns function from ts-209 is worked but the detected IP address is incorrect! I don't know where that IP address from? It is not the NAT address! e.g. 222.166.160.133
