none of these need to have port forwards from WAN to work

disable it and test it .. should still all work fine

Looks like that worked out, the only thing that seemed to break was the "guest account" that I had on my router which was basically just an account I could give friends and change the password to without changing my main password (which I dont really need), I assume that doesnt work with upnp off?

Other than that, accessing my Qnap surveillance app/feed doesnt work from the phone, which I assume is normal as well, thats the only thing I guess I need to solve now which is where the VPN comes in I assume?

"Guest account" for the router ? or you mean for the NAS ?

From now on remote access would need to be done via VPN , yes

Guest account on my router, I ended up just making a new guest account and it worked.

On to my VPN situation, I think my router has directions on how to set one up, but I assume I just buy one and when I set it up on my router it will ask for the login details and on my phone I download the app and do the same?

How does it make the connection to my qnap from the Vmobile app (I think thats a qnap app for Surveillance Station actually)?

And Ive used NordVPN and Private Internet Access in the past, is there a "best" for my situation thats user friendly? Thanks again

As said before, the kind of VPN you need here will not cost anything, so forget PIA or NordVPN... YOU are the hoster for that VPN service.

If you are in the marked for a new router, i can say the ASUS routers with Merlin firmware (mod) are pretty good.

So, will VPN be self explanatory since I don't need a "service" when I setup? and how does it connect to the app I review video feed on then?

And I'm not in the market for a new router but I saw that Merlin firmware Asus router pop up quite a bit when I was searching so definitely something ill save

depending on your phone, vpn is either builtin or needs to be installed via app

OpenVPN client for Iphone

and Android

Do you have any tutorials on how to do the Asus Router side of it? I went to do the VPN and basically all it asks me to do is turn it on and make a usename/password, I still dont see how those connect to the qnap to give me access through Qnaps Vmobile app -- Thanks

Ok thanks, I just got back to the computer, so I have the VPN on my router and on my iPhone (and shows connected on my router when I open VPN on my phone), but I assume there is still a missing link to view my NAS surveillance station recordings through iPhone Vmobile -- When I click the NAS server in Vmobile app it says "Fail to connect to the server. Please checking the settings and network environment"

Can you try killing the Vmobile app, then relaunching it? This should ensure it sees the new route via your VPN client.

if vmobile app had you public IP in it, it won't work.

try the private IP of your NAS

Ah, that's more likely the issue. :geek:

I assume it’s the “public IP” still since it shows the same one on the Vmobile app that I’ve been using

Do I need to setup any VPN stuff on the QNAP/NAS? If not, where would I find the private IP? Then do I delete the NAS from the Vmobile app and re-add it with the private IP?

Private IP is the internal IP your NAS has

probably something like
192.168.x.y

If the VPN server is setup on your router, your internal network should be reachable from your OpenVPN transit range
