QNAP Announces The Lifecycle Policy of Surveillance Station

Post by Davo456 »

Taipei, Taiwan, July 8, 2021 - QNAP® Systems, Inc. (QNAP) today announced the lifecycle policy of Surveillance Station.

Surveillance Station’s lifecycle policy is divided into three phases:

QNAP NAS models released from 2021 onwards will not support Surveillance Station.
Surveillance Station licenses will no longer be available from the QNAP Software Store from August 1, 2021.
Future updates and support for Surveillance Station will follow the Product Support Status for individual devices.
Those looking to upgrade their surveillance solution can consider next-generation solutions from QNAP. These include QVR Pro, which supports up to 128 camera channels and can be integrated with QVR Face smart facial recognition (license purchase required), or the subscription-based QVR Elite to have up to 192 camera channels with subscription fees starting from only US $1.99 per month. Users can centrally manage all QNAP surveillance servers, including Surveillance Station, QVR Pro and QVR Elite servers with QVR Center. (Note: The maximum number of channels supported varies by NAS model, network configuration, and camera settings.)

To allow a smooth migration to next-generation surveillance applications, QNAP is offering Surveillance Station users with free QVR Elite 3-year licenses. Surveillance Station users can check if they are entitled to these free licenses on the event page:

so now, for my question, having using Surviellance Station for the last 5 years - where do I go from here ?

I have 6 cameras, spread across 2 NAS: TS453A and a TS653D, with Sync recordings across them.

QVR-Pro looks free, but is limited to 14 days maximum playback

QVR-Elite would likely be free for the first 3 years (and 2 channels per NAS are free) and I may be able to run across the 2 NAS in some sort of sharing/backup mode.

What would poeple recommend ? Pro or Elite ?

I have been happy with QVRPro. Recordings older than 14 days are still available from File Station. I also backup events to a usb hard drive. I do not pay for a license with two cameras.

I have TS-431XeU and use Surveillance station for about 2 years.
There were 2 free licenses and I purchased 3rd one for about 60EUR.
QVR pro is not an option for this ARM based NAS. Recently there appeared QVR Elite in App Center.
Surveillance Station suits me well.
I don't like current fashion way of getting subscription fees monthly. I know what I want and I want it for years. Why should I overpay just because vendor wants squeeze more money from me?!

I hope Surveillance station will remain including the license. But it's a pity I can't purchase additional licenses after August (in case I'd need to).
There is possibility to make a camera from mobile phone which might be handy sometimes.

QVRpro is very ressource hungry. I replaced it with Shinobi (I use it as docker image).
Compared to QVRPro it runs like a dream! You can use every modern browser to watch streams an recordings. No app is needed.

I have not noticed or had any resource issues with QVRpro running on a modest TS 251+
